Can't think what I'd use it for, where can you shoot with one, so what good are they?

There's a "review video" from the vendor with a nice girl in a pink hat wholly missing a target with one of these things here (0:56):

If you want to prep for the end of days that much just go to France, legally buy a black powder revolver and just carry it back. Or apply for a shotgun ticket, depending where in the UK you are they can be as easy as buying a lotto ticket.

I wouldn't buy what you linked. It's a Walter Mitty website look at the shite they sell, I've heard of Cold Steel making knives but not crossbows.

Look here these are the real deal https://www.barnettcrossbows.com/ designed to take out large game.

After having my garage broken into twice I've thought that having a pistol style one would be quite nice to have Smile

From what I have read so far you don't have to spend big bucks even those on the cheaper end of the spectrum still have the same devastating effects.

They won't make anywhere near claimed draw weights, biggest issue though is they wont hit what you point them at with any reliability. I've had a cheapo Armex one in the past and at 15 meters grouping was over 12"...... that's shite you can't reliably hit anything without an element of fluke.

If you think it's a cool looking toy though, go nuts. It'll be good for shits and giggles in the garden.

I have a pistol crossbow I bought ages ago. I do olympic style archery as a hobby, so I have plenty of bows but I dont really have any interest in crossbows. Most of the stuff you find on websites like that are cheap crap designed for a bit of messing about with in the garden for people that think they are prepping for the end of the world Laughing

wr6133 is right, they wont be as powerful or accurate as you think. My mate had a cheap 70lbs one and it was very under powered for the draw weight, especially when I compared it to my 30lbs bow and wasn't very accurate either. A lot of people think that because it says 70lbs on the box that must mean it's really powerful, when a lot of that power is wasted because of the cheap limbs.

What's your reason for buying it? they are good for some fun, but I'd want a gun for any end of the world shit.

Pretty sure that stops being legal once you get it into the UK though, and black powder pistols do take a bit of knowing what you're doing. Even experienced shooters hurt themselves - chap local to me lost a couple of fingers when he had a flash over when reloading a flintlock pistol and he'd been shooting muzzle loaders for decades.

To be refused a shotgun certificate there has to be a reason to not grant one. The default position is that you get one.
If you've not had a previous custodial sentence etc and you get a safe to store it then you're pretty much guaranteed a cert (I think, unless things have changed recently).

I have a couple of crossbows. A cheap pistol one with a self loader that I can load quicker than an air rifle and a really nice wooden one that will put a bolt through a much thicker bit of wood than most (legal) things at close range.

They are a bit of fun and actually the big bow has cheap laser dot that I have sighted and isn't too bad accuracy. The pistol bow I have bought some fishing bolts to try when I go in the Nene river later this year.

They are not toys though. They can really do some damage. Put it this way, I have some antique flintlock and percussion cap guns that I have fired (home made balls and black powder) and I'd rather have the big crossbow if I had to depend on it.

Be warned. If you were to threaten someone breaking into your garage with a crossbow, that would not in the eyes of the law be at all acceptable. If you were to shoot someone, there might be extreme difficulties. Even carrying a crossbow about might give rise to problems. The law has teeth.
