PostPosted: 09:22 - 11 Jun 2020    Post subject: British Comedy Reply with quote

British comedy is world-renown and something we have been proud of. Over the last couple of weeks however some of our most ground-breaking and arguably funniest programmes have been withdrawn because a character or characters have been white men 'blacked up'. The comedians involved have asked for their programmes to be removed from Netflix etc because they consider something that was acceptable in the past to be offensive now. Fair enough, its their work. My question is, how far should we as a society go with this? Taken to its logical conclusion we need to remove any programme that contains a stereotype, and that wipes out all comedy pre Ben Elton plus 90% of what followed. Where does this leave Ali G or Till Death Do Us Part, to give two examples of comedy containing racial stereotypes that are intended to poke fun at white people? I don't want to get all Mpd here but I feel that we need a Guardian columnist to tell us what we are allowed to find funny nowadays, because get it wrong and we end up on the racist step...

Firstly, I must say it's really nice to interact with a self-confessed leftie that isn't reeing and screeching all the time; if you just sat on social media you'd think moderate lefties with well thought through ideas didn't exist any more. Having a conversation like this would see you labelled many nasty things in double quick time.

I would heartily recommend this Jordan Peterson video to dissect some of the themes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfH8IG7Awk0

That link should take you to the relevant point but nonetheless the entire video is an extremely impressive take-down of postmodernism and an explanation of how its routes are founded in failed Marxism and has just been rebranded to keep the ideology alive. It's scary how it's actually working! About an hour and 50 mins without the Q&A which I must say I wouldn't bother with, but well worth the time to watch.

It also brings up Maoist China and the eradication of Chinese culture en-masse to 'usher in the new order'. Almost eerily poignant at the moment, wouldn't you say.

Agree.

It makes me laugh when I hear people saying 'Till Death us do Part' was racist. It was probably the most anti racist thing on the tv at the time showing Alf to be a real bigot. Pretty much the same with Rigsby in 'Rising Damp'.

I don't think people are able to laugh at serious issues anymore. Just because it's a comedy it seems the PC brigade think it's wrong. Can you imagine 'Spitting Image' getting stuck into some of the whiney PC brigade and their crusade against anything they deem bad? The faux indignation would be nauseating.

Anyway, I have a new flag on order that would be considered wrong by the SJW's. Dance! It should be here for my trip out this weekend.

A while back I downloaded "It Ain't Half Hot Mum." Illicitly because that went down the PC plughole like the others mentioned.

Oh dear, how sad, never mind....

I grew up on comedies like that and it is what I say to my kids when they can't get what they want Laughing

I barely watch any TV anyway so don't care in the grand scheme of things.

My main point of questioning is this:

Not long ago cartoons like this were considered acceptable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUYarKCTvIk

In fact, my brother and I had this on VHS in the 90s. I don't know when it was pulled from the shelves, but it certainly isn't featured in the mainstream any more. In hindsight, it's blindingly obvious why a cartoon like that would be banned.

Maybe future generations will feel the same about things like blackface in Little Britain? Who knows. It's difficult to see the bad side of something if it's all you've ever known and it never seemed that bad, to you, personally.

Also, as all the right wing libertarian free marketeers would like to say: Free markets is as free markets does. If producers are withdrawing their content to appease the crowd and stay profitable, then that's the way it is! Don't like it? Then go somewhere else! Wink

All I can say on the subject is that I can remember my Nan complaining when 'Mind your language' was taken off the air and was never repeated any more.

The comments on that make for some interesting reading. A lot of self-righteous we built America comments, countered by the, oh no you didn't, the Mexicans and Chinese built most of it comments.

But they're not doing it to appease the crowd they're doing it to please the ideologues. I suspect they think it's something grand like a good ol' book burning - people oft quote 1984 but don't forget Fahrenheit 451 - thankfully we have The Internet to bypass such censorship.

Until the day personal hard drive ownership is banned these works will live on forever!

Stanley Kubrick withdrew clockwork orange in 1969 and you couldnt watch it until after his death due to it being implicated as the reason behind a couple of serious assaults.

The artist has the right to withdraw his or her art if they feel it's no longer appropriate.

Don't forget, Nazi Germany was quite proficient at book burning.

Fair comment. Looking forward to Harry Potter being withdrawn Wink

Just read that the Fawlty Towers episode "Don't mention the war" has been taken down as unsuitable. I mean WTBF? I'm speechless

Black Hawk down is a film that pretty much consists of US forces shooting black people and calling them "Skinnies".
How long until you can't watch that anymore?

Edit: Okay, I realise it isn't a comedy, or British but the reflection on cancel culture is still relevant.

Coming to America can never be shown again on tv then. That Murphy fellow whiting up, I felt violated when that came out, just wait till they knock up a statue for him, I shall be straight over with my crow bar.

Weirdly, two of my contractors helped take down the Milligan statue, one was photographed in his lorry with it staring over his shoulder from the back. Next morning when he was out with me he was yawning saying he didn't finish work till 10pm the night before. Then last night my mate showed me a picture of the statue as he had found it stored in a workshop when he went to collect a traffic warden's scooter for a service, small world.

I'm also burying my DVD box sets of Love Thy Neighbour and It Aint Alf Hot Mum in a secret location before the thought police get me.

It's bad enough they are trying to get my Uncle Baden's statue removed, but to attack a chap's (sorry, non gender specific, binary wossname's) comedy is a bit too much.

I have visions of a similar scene to the Life of Brian's where Pontius Pilate is testing the guards with his mates' names to see if they laugh and having them executed if they do. Me, standing to attention as a government appointed official circles me saying things like "Shut up Mr Ladiddah Gunner Graham." to see if I smirk

When you are in a war you demonise the opposition.

Hun, Argies, Japs, Slopes, Rag heads, Tans, Rosbif, Les Goddams, Bonga Bongal, Infidels, etc. etc.

Nothing new there, every country does it.

I don't think Zulu would be quite the same with Michael Caine telling the Welshies (oops, sorry) Welsh chaps to shoot the nice people of colour.
