I'm in the middle of decorating and I have 2 switches that have fuses in them. What are the purposes of the fused switch as opposed to a normal switch.

https://cdn.aws.toolstation.com/images/141020-UK/800/95225.jpg

One has a light on it (for the water pump) and one does not. If I were to change one, would I need to fit one with a light on it or is this purely to let you know that it is on?

Furthermore, I have no idea what the other fused switch does. I don't even know if it is live or not.

It sits near to the door between the kitchen and the living room which is also near to the old coal shelter in the side of the house (only access from outside)

*There is a taped up wire hanging down from the ceiling in there with nothing on the end of it. I suspect that it might be from that but I really don't know for sure.

How could I find out if that switch and wire were connected and if they are live or not?

And finally, I had plans to fit a projector eventually (since a large TV is not really practical once the decorating is complete). Would it be possible to hard wire a projector (assuming that it came with a plug) into the ceiling where the current light is?

Cheers

No fuse on the appliance. Typically a fan.

Re the projector, typically the lighting circuit is 5 amp and mains is 13. If you hard wire you remove the fuse and the projector is potentially higher wattage than the lighting circuit is designed for.

In a work environment, projectors are plugged into a mains socket
Set in the suspended ceiling.

That type of switch is typically used for a 'fused spur'
they usually tap into a ring main (which is typically fused at say 30A)
and use a lower rated fuse for the device,( washing machine, dishwasher, external lights, pumps, security lights etc)
Yep the light is to indicate power on, not vital but useful.

It may well be that one switch is for that dangling lead is no longer needed and
testing is simple enough but the obvious precautions MUST be taken before testing and work.

Sorry, I'm reluctant go into details as
I dont have perfect understanding of exactly what you have there
so can only make assumptions/guesses and that's not a safe way to work.

I'd want to know the power consumption of a projector before even thinking about plumbing it into a light circuit
But best practise would be to drop in a cable from an upstairs source
