I bought a starter motor from eBay (a trader) which was described as fully tested and working. It arrived and was terrible. It grated when turned by hand and wouldn’t run when fed electric. The trader has agreed to a refund (which he / seems reticent to do) subject to me returning it. Surely I shouldn’t pay for return postage in these circumstances? It’s not an error on my part in buying the wrong part but a blatant misrepresentation on their part.
I’m half expecting a dispute that it’s a different part that got returned to the one supplied (it’s not, that’s a prick trick in my opinion) and would not be surprised if I end up contacting eBay..
I’m just pleased I tested it before I fitted it to the bike. I’d have been chomping if I had to rip the engine apart again and buy another gasket for the alternator cover!

I've had ebay resolutions insist that the postage paid for item not as sold was paid by the seller.

https://pages.ebay.com/ebay-money-back-guarantee/questions.html#:~:text=To%20start%20a%20return%2C%20find,see%20your%20anticipated%20refund%20amount.

Under "handling returns on eBay" it says "who pays for return shipping?" and has "click here" as URL. That should lead you to the process of proving the part is defective and hopefully avoid paying shipping.

eBay often finds in favour of buyers, much to the annoyance of sellers. Sometimes that means that they pay you out of their own pocket and let the seller keep their dollar, but that means nothing to no one but them.

Cut the seller some slack. Unless they've got a large amount of negative reviews (out of proportion with the amount of sales they make) it could just be that they've "tested it" in a way that differs from what you expect. If they've not removed the part themselves or don't have a vehicle to test it on then sometimes you finding an issue can be the first time either party knows about it.

Ultimately you purchased a part expecting it to work, and it didn't so you'll get your money back eventually but you may have to wait depending on how stubborn they are.

Their going to be slow about it. They face loosing money for a part that isn't working which means it all probably end up in the bin.

It's a starter motor. When you turned it by hand it felt and sounded like it was full of sand. With 12v applied it wouldn't run. How else could it have been tested??

Not as described ( ie working) > apply for return > seller accepts return > seller pays postage. WIN

I don't like it ( or whatever) > I decide to return > I pay postage.

For Example:

Ebay returns:
Doesn't work or is defective
Comments
"Whilst it all looks lovely and shiny in the box and has bright packaging this welding torch is actually of appallingly low quality. It does not match the description "Robust construction - long life." and "High-quality, super-soft monocable." Frankly, it is so poorly made as to be unusable. The shroud that goes around the tip is so loose fitting that it touches the tip, it should be concentric. ( see picture). The item has not even been taken out of the box it is so obviously useless. It is in perfect condition as it was delivered. I wish to return this item for a refund. As it is not as described, I believe that I should not have to pay the postage. The seller should pay the postage. "

Seller accepted return.
I've just printed out the label and going to post office this afternoon.

You'd have to ask the seller, and perhaps may even have been a generic listing description to save time depending on how many items they post (you can create a template and then mass produce listings in just a few clicks -- manually adding prices, photographs etc for variations).

I'm not excusing the fact you've got a defective item, but rather that selling used motor goods is often more trouble than its worth. In your case its quite straight forward, but there are some quite anal buyers out their expecting the best for pennies.

As I say above opening a case via the resolution centre should get you your desired outcome of a full refund.

Thumbs Up
