That someone, being myself.

Why might I buy a pillion seat for a bike I don't own?

https://cdn.bcf.44bytes.net/files/pillionseat.jpg

All will be revealed, but until that time I thought it would be fascinating to see if anyone on BCF can work it out? Smile

Speculate away!

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Well if it was me, I'd do that and buy other bike-specific items until I eventually pluck up the courage to say to the wife "well, you keep saying how all this stuff is cluttering up your wardrobe, if you let me buy the bike it's all for then I can remove my pillion seat from your dress".

So, angling for a new bike by buying bits for it before the bike itself?

Just a few clues:

My other half has never objected to me buying bikes - so that's not a reason.

There might be the odd hint in posts I've made elsewhere on the forum...

I'm gonna stick with that until the weekend I think.

Buell XB, scratching an itch started in the "Bikes you want for no rational reason" thread? Looks a bit like the pillion seat on one of those.

I know I said I wasn't gonna comment, but I sold one of those last Summer. Same colours and all.

Because you really, really, want to go out riding hugging your new lover... but his bike doesn't have the pillion seat fitted, and he's too tight to buy you one?

Because you've turned into an attention seeking 14 year old girl.

Not wanting to brag, but I don't actually have a belly to speak of. Plus it ruins the lines of the VFR.

I don't have a new lover, and the old lover has her own bike. We tried the pillion thing, it didn't work too well.

I'm surprised nobody suggested it as a hat:

https://cdn.bcf.44bytes.net/files/hat.jpg

but no, that doesn't really work. It doesn't stay on of it's own accord, which is kind of one of the essential properties of a hat.

Warmer. As the immortal Roy Walker used to say on Catchphrase: "It's a good answer, but it's not the right one"

wr6133 wrote:

Interesting...

So today I collected this:

https://cdn.bcf.44bytes.net/files/gixxus.jpg

I needed to replace my aging VFR because of Siddique Khan and his ludicrous Ultra Low Emission Zone. It's expanding next year to encompass both of my offices and the VFR is most certainly out of luck on that. Despite it having a catalytic converter and a standard exhaust system. Weirdly my Street Triple R with a titanium full system is OK because it's newer than 2007. Go figure!

I wanted a few things:

Arrow Comfort. The VFR is surprisingly 'wristy' and my hips are bent to a fair angle on it. It might be because I'm not the tallest of gentlemen. The GSX-S (THAT just rolls off of the tongue! Not.) is very like the Street Triple, only with a squishier seat, a fraction more forward lean and quite an effective fairing.

Arrow Wind protection. Not quite as good as the VFR but it's not got clip ons, so you're always going to lose out a bit if you want more comfort.

Arrow Be standard and meet the relevant Euro emissions standards - obviously.

Nice to have:

Arrow 150bhp. Who doesn't want that? Officially the most powerful bike I've owned

Arrow Decent handling. Yeah it's a GSXR that's been modified for us olds.

Arrow ABS

Arrow Traction control

The only question is what do I call it? Gixxus sounds stupid... but there isn't another obvious choice. Although given the blue, grey and black paint scheme, and the weird pointy curvy motifs on the fairing I might just call it the bat bike.

8 year old boy maybe? It's the childish side of me that wanted the 150bhp for my commute!!

Oh yeah! The pillion seat, right. right.

Well, I don't want to handicap this bike with a rack. I was not super happy with the giant Givi wingrack on my VFR, especially with the giant windcatcher top box. The handling could be... interesting with as little as 5kg in the box so I'm going to go down the alternative route of buying a universal Givi monokey plate and fitting it to a spare pillion seat. I saw one on ebay and snapped it up before I picked up the bike. I'm going to go with a 40 litre box instead of 56 litre so it doesn't catch the wind so much, and keeping the weight closer to my body/the centre of the bike should mean the handling is not too compromised. Also the VFR is longer than a barge with the box fitted, so it means the GSXS is a bit more bijou.

Also the weight. The reported weights of the bikes are different as the VFR is reported dry, and the GSXS reported wet. Even so, the GSXS's wet weight (214kg) is less than the VFR's dry weight. Best I can tell, the GSXS weighs around 50kg less than the VFR. The turning circle is also better. I will miss the VFR when it goes because it does remind me very much of my first 'big' bike (an NC21 VFR400) but I won't miss the weight and the wristy nature. I might miss the sound, the side mounted leg warming radiators, the capacious fairing and the air temperature readout on a cold morning.

But, the GSXS sounds surprisingly fruity, and it sounds like Pavarotti chortling with a mouthful of food at a dinner party on the overrun.

Hopefully I've now done enough showing and telling. Smile

I'm sure I've got a 40 litre givi box here that you can have for nothing. Might be a 35 litre? I'll have a look tomorrow Thumbs Up

Thanks. It has to be the 40 because of the load rating. The 35 litre ones (And smaller) have a 3kg limit! The bigger monokey ones have a 10kg limit. My work bag is 5kg... so I think trying to use a 3kg box is probably pushing it a bit. If it’s a 40 litre monokey I would be very appreciative of it!! Very Happy

Good choice - if Letchworth Suzuki had been anywhere close to on the ball this is what i would have bought instead of the Z1000SX.

Must be something about Hertfordshire main dealers, Watford Kawasaki were a bunch of useless pillocks too.

Nice machine.

A bit of a shame on suzuki for not trying to rival the z1000sx with this a bit more. Standard hardbags and a bit more of a focus could have gone a long way.

My opinon the low ratings are due to the insecure way they attach to the plate. It is better to drill and bolt through so that it is secure, and instead remove the whole rack when needed. On mine this is just 4 bolts. I have put over 20kg in various boxes over the years and I do not ride slow, none have failed. The 30 quid, 52 litre boxes are my preference as they are abs and more resistant to damage than the givi one I had which was a brittle plastic.

Id also be careful mounting a box to a seat. Seats are not held on that well as they are designed for downward force of a lardy pillion, I have not seen any seats secured adequately for a box.

I tried one of those, it's not as much fun. Heavier and more serious, and it didn't blow me away power wise. It also didn't want to turn. The GSX-S turns nicely, which is unusual for me who only weighs just under 10 stone.
