I’ve been trying to get a 1999 er5 up and running after someone abandoned the project. My next issue is that the speedo is running far too fast, travelling around 20mph reads at 70mph. I haven’t delved into it as yet but it looks to be cable driven so will this be a fault inside the speedo? Are there any common faults to look for?

The Rev counter is also faulty but it is a common diode and resistor fault doesn’t It’s on my list. (Reg Rec also replaced)

It uses a common 1:37.3 cable driven mechanical speedo, so if yours is showing 70 when you're doing 20, it's broken.

Has the front wheel been changed?

I had (probably incorrectly) assumes it would just not register any speed if the cable was broken? Or does it give high readings?

The front wheel may have been changed, I don’t know its history but the guy that had it as a project has changed quite a lot! I’ll have a look see if I can find out what the original wheel and tyre size is and match up.

Sorry just checked the eBay link and you mean the clock is broken! That makes sense! I’ll check out wheel and tyre sizes and if there’s no difference I’ll order a clock! Thanks.

It's not the size of the wheel but the gearing in the mechanism that turns the cable.

Unless he's put 12 inch wheel on there with the same gearing ratio. Laughing
