What's going on with the bike prices . Is there such a thing as bargain anymore ?

I sold my bike last August as I don't have a garage anymore . I've got the knack now with all this nice weather so thought I'd get myself a cheap hack to pootle about on this summer .

Problem is the prices are through the roof . Even absaloute wrecks that are non runners your looking at a grand . I got rid of my gsx750 inazuma with fresh mot for £600 🤔🤔

I think it's a seasonal thing. In October, prices will drop. Now is not the time of year to be looking for bargains. Just my observation.

I think it’s a mixture of inflation, nostagia and people have got used to the internet (eBay).

Everyone and their gran thinks their bike is worth something.

“It’s an easy fix but I just haven’t got round to it”

Anything from the 80s regardless of how bad it was is now considered a classic.

Because rose tinted glasses. Sunny days spent pushing heaps of old shite back to the house doesn’t seem so bad anymore.

Buy in autumn/winter and sell in spring/summer. Only natural prices are high when the weather is blazing.

There are plenty of bargains, you just need to be willing to travel and have cash at the ready.

Given the current situation I doubt dealers selling used bikes are willing to budge on price just to give them the best chance of keeping them afloat. I spoke to my local shop recently and he said at a period where they should be busy the workshop was only getting trickles in comparison to last year.

On the whole I'd say you're in the best position given you don't have one to get rid of, so perhaps search eBay for "lowest price AND p&p" and then see what comes up for the model you want.

Or facebook marketplace (if you're brave and can beat away the tards) or auto-trader. I found a few on both that weren't listed via eBay.

May find more private sellers, mind, given some may be getting rid to bring in a bit of cash flow.

Few days ago I test rode an MV Agusta Brutale 990R.

It was up for sale at £5499. When I looked through the paperwork it was sold at a dealership in 2016 for.....£5499. 4 years newer, with less miles, and a more complete service history.

Since I've been looking for bikes I was looking at a Speed Triple. Last of the round eye bikes up for £5k. I test rode one in 2009 (ish, I think it was 09) and very nearly bought it - it would have cost me £6,200. How can it be 10 years later that it would have only depreciated a grand FFS.

When I was looking for a bike I found that 90% were not on ebay and most are just posted on Facebook. Probably because it's easier and everyone has it on their phone, which would explain why the adverts always suck.
It also makes it very easy for everyone else to spot the bargains since you can get notifications for stuff you've been searching and if you post them to groups they show up on everyone's feed.

Facebook marketplace is where the real deals are.

Have to wade through a lot of dodgy shit and retards but thats where the realistic prices are if you are looking for something under 1.5k

eBay, Autotrader et al all take a cut but with that comes some security. Facebook Marketplace is like the wild west Neutral

Just be careful to just sell through the local groups. If you post to the general market place you'll just get an endless stream of muppets messaging you. Last time I sold a car it was pretty much "I'll gi ya tree-fivtie an' a dawg..." Sad

The Sub £1k bargains have been thin on the ground for a while. They still exist but you mostly need to either know someone who knows someone who wants to sell something or get lucky on Facebook.

I suspect most of them are now cheap commuter bikes in Eastern Europe. I know in the past many of my perfectly usable but fucked looking old nails ended up in the back of vans heading to Poland. Worse the £ is against the Euro the more this happens, thanks to Brexit the pound has not been the strongest.

I think the bargains are up around £2k now. You can get tidy early 2000's litre bikes around that number. Proper superbikes without all the electronic crap for under £2k. It's crazy amounts of speed for the money.

Also, I think there's going to be, at least a short term bump in popularity, go back to work, avoid public transport, every man and his dog will try to use the car, parking will be a ballache, what better substitution than a bike, easier to park. Coupled with this, have you seen the weather lately? It makes biking even more appealing, especially to the less experienced, wait until we have a few days of rain, the prices will be washed down, just like incy wincy spider Laughing Laughing Laughing

Them as well. I fancy another Wing but they are right out of my price range. Even sh1t 1200's are asking silly money and I'd never have another one of them, way too old.

1500 & 1800 6 cylinder jobbies are rediculous.

Stuff I'm into seems cheap enough.. Nice YZF 750s for 2k ish OTR..
and plenty of project stuff for under a grand provided you're not too picky.

That's not to say some thng haven't gone nuts. 5-6 years ago you could pick up a roadworthy GT250 for 5-600 quid, same thing now easy 2k.
Avoid 2Ts and cafe fodder and you should be OK.

No idea about Facebook, I despise its very existence a little bit more each day.

I think you’re being generous saying you can pick up a GT 250 for 2k.
These days the sharks selling them are wanting north of 3k, and that is why I will not buy another one in the current climate.

As for Face-ache Book! , I couldn’t agree more.

Yet I ended up selling my ER5 which was in good order with new-ish tyres for £350 (trade in)! It was a previous (cosmetic) write off so nobody wanted it, but it was perfectly OK as a basic bike. Clean-history ones are selling for north of £1k, sometimes closer to £2k (which is ridiculous for what they are). I probably could have got closer to the £700 or so I paid for it originally if I held out on a private sale, but I wanted to get it out of the garage to make way for the new bike.

It was meant to be a point that toys are not dropping in price.

I really expected cars, bikes, boats, large price stuff that is not regarded as a necessity to drop like a stone with people desperate to sell after covid. It hasn't happened. Boat prices, which is what I deal with on a day to day basis, have gone up. As much as 20% for the boats in the £25000 to £60000 price range.

Also from what I see bike prices and car prices don't show any downturn, and going up in some cases. Now whether that is because furlough has lessened the need for people to sell I don't know but surely there is much less disposable cash around now so maybe if you can wait until furlough ends and the reality of getting made redundant hits, you will get some good deals.

It's great isn't it. I've sold two bikes in the last week and I'm well over a grand up in profit from this time last year. I didn't even do any work to them, and both MOTs lapsed. Laughing

I wonder, when it comes to cars and possibly bikes, this is connected with the trend for large swathes of people to get vehicles on finance, especially those agreements where they can be just handed back again at the end of the period. With furlough and general widespread financial uncertainty, sensible folk might be deciding to hold back from such commitments, while less sensible folk might be getting kicked back by wary finance companies. Either way, those people who would ordinarily be drawing on new/nearly new stock but without much capital for buying outright are instead perhaps turning to the used market, more specifically the middle/lower end of it where they can buy outright? This could solidify or even inflate that segment of the market.

It also doesn't help that mid range bikes like the Z650 for example which is basically an ER6 (with slightly less power) are priced at £6.5-7k+ ain't great, when I got my license in 2013 I remember seeing GSXR 1000s new on sale for about £8-9k
