His last bike was a 600C.C. four cylinder and he wants a lighter and easier bike now as he's not young .

A light and tall bike - DRZ400, CRF250L, KLX250 and the 300cc versions of the CRF and KLX. The Aprilia Tuaureg is a new thing but cheaper than the Yamaha T7 iirc. Both of those are quite tall, and a lot more fun than the others.

That said. For a 3 mile commute, electric bicycle? A moped? Something small and silly he always wanted as a kid? A 3 mile commute wont even warm up a bigger 4-stroke and feeling cramped on something isn't really going to be an issue over that sort of distance.

I feel obliged to mention the 350 Enfields.

EDIT. I have a similar length commute and I've just started doing up a Minsk 125 with the intention of riding it to and from work. Mrs stinkwheel does a much longer commute on a Honda Wave 110.

Ebike is really the best option for this in most cases. I put a mid-drive kit on a second-hand Orange hardtail for ~£1200 and it's bloody brilliant.

If it's got to be a motorbike, maybe something like my old TTR250? Skyscraper seat height, but very light and super friendly. Could even get some green laning in, if he's in the mood.
