PostPosted: 14:58 - 04 Jul 2020    Post subject: Honda cg125 engine Reply with quote

Hello bikers,

I'm new to being on the road, had my cg125 3 months, turns out I am an idiot and although I checked the oil I didn't realize it was empty. Now my engine is dead, and I'm broke and was going to use the bike to get to work.

I have looked everywhere and the only spare cg125 engine I can find is on eBay but the guy won't respond to messages.

So my concern is even if I find a working engine; there are different years to the same bike. Mine has both Kickstarter and electric. And I have no idea about mechanics... Clearly, I couldn't even read the oil measure correctly.

So I'm looking for a cg125 engine, also need to know if my bike would work with both earlier and older models, I assume it would but I'm not sure. Or is there another company that does engines that fit? All I care about is being able to get to work asap.

First post so sorry if this doesn't adhere to the rules,

EDIT:
Thanks for all your replies, so first of all, yes I managed to read the dipstick wrong. So I guess that makes me a dips***.

I do have a mechanical assistance from family friend but I can't expect him to do everything. (He has dismounted the engine when atteyto repair but found the interior parts stuck together) I'm sure he will assist putting the new engine on. The bike is a 51plate, and the replacement engine I found on eBay was a CDI engine so from what you peeps are saying that should work on mine? All I'm bothered about is getting it up and running again. I don't have the means to pick up a non runner and bring it home to salvage as I only just got my CBT.

I just grabbed the manual for a flick through it says CG125M. If that helps...

So yeah ultimately I guess it sounds like the engine I found should fit as it's CDI. Does that mean I'll only have the Kickstarter? Again, I don't care as long as it works.

So you got a bike and didn’t read the users manual! Doh!
What year is your bike?
Do you have a service manual?

If you want help/answers, then supply as much information as possible.

Congratulations Shocked you are the first person I have ever known to kill a CG engine.
It’s not as easy as just getting another CG engine, there are a variety of models, don’t expect just any CG engine to fit.
You might get lucky.

Didn't miss tamsin also kill a CG engine and have to get a replacement?
IIRC in 2004 they updated it and changed the engine slightly but I think all the bikes before this date since 1975 were basically the same.

How do you check the oil and not realise it's empty?

Let's hope for an answer! Sometimes on eBay people don'r respond quickly, or at weekends. If the OP has no mechanical knowledge, perhaps someone else will be swapping the engine.

FWIW: "Eelectric start added 2001, kick start still also fitted, kickstart discontinued 2004"

You might be easier buying a complete bike to rob the engine from. You can then sell the rest on eBay for spares.

It'll probably be an M1 model, 2001-2003. The W model from 98-00 is much the same but doesn't have the electric start. The engine mounts look similar in the later models also but I'd have to do some digging to be sure. You will likely be able to fit an engine from an earlier model as long as it's a CDI model (1993 onwards IIRC). You might need the carb as well for the earlier models as the W and M1 models are different.

Get yourself a Haynes manual, they are actually quite detailed for the CG. It contains the wiring diagrams, etc. Dropping the engine isn't actually all that difficult compared to other bikes but you will likely have a problem with the front mounting bolts being seized into the engine casing. I had to grind the heads off of the bolts to get the engine out and then run a pillar drill through the actual engine casing to drill the body of the bolts out. They had basically become one with the casing. Get a pro to do this if you have little mechanical experience, it won't be expensive.

Where are you located?

You may do quite well out of selling it. Project bikes are selling at the moment - a lot of people have a lot of time on their hands.

I was interested in this. One from around the same time with an engine needing replacement went for £280 on eBay recently. The cheapest functional intact one is currently £895.

Don't knock biking and being hard up.

'Biking on the Dole' was pretty much a lifestyle back in the 80's and 90's ... there was a magazine dedicated to it, the 'Used Bike Guide'. It was a small magazine like a readers digest size, and printed on the cheapest paper, with loads of adverts in the back (long before the net and Ebay), it invited articles from readers, I might have had an article or two in it myself...

Consider it a lesson learned, the young bloke next to me did the same on a DZR400, he had only ever had 2 strokes before and didn't know about 'oil'.

If you still have the remains , you could learn a bit about bikes by taking it to bits and flogging the parts on Ebay or Facebook...

We could be going back there if the economic forecasts are correct.

Used bike guide was a very entertaining read.

One story I remember quite vividly concerned a bike getting air over a hump and cutting a reliant Robin in half when landing the other side.....

That'll be OK then.

Have you found out where the oil goes in, and checked it?

Oh, what is it, by the way?
