Hi All
FZ750 weeping rocker cover gasket => Change it => Better check valves while I got all the rad etc.. off.
Bugger 80% are tight or under the limit..
..Cams out
Now need a good handful of shims. Are these universal across different nikes 7.48mm size crops up on ebay..
..or does anyone operate a swaps pool?

I tend to go for Hot Cams shims if possible.
Have also used dirtbikestore and ordered individual shims over the years.
Always measure with a micrometer so am sure what goes in is ok.
Checked 15k miles later and things still in spec. |

I have two large boxes of the Hot Cams shim kits that were bought from a friend who sold his WR450F and no longer had a need for them.Since then i have added my spares that I have accrued over the years of Yamaha ownership ie. the Exup1000 and 5JJ-R1.
If the clearances are negative and there is insufficient space to get even the thinnest of feeler gauge in to place,then the only way would be to remove each shim and note the etched size...or in the worst case scenario to measure those where the size has been worn away...then to plot them on a table and try and ascertain where you can move them around so as to work out what size you need where.
What I found easiest was to support the cam chain in the middle of the cylinder head,then to have one cam bolted in to place and sort those sizes first,turning the cam by hand with the pistons/crankshaft positioned so that they are halfway up the bores so that there is no interference with the opening valves.Then,if it is possible to correctly ascertain the correct clearances using the shims from both inlet and exhaust,order only those that you need from the likes of Wemoto or Yambits,which is where I bought spares from before I bought the Action Cams kits.
When the cam chain tensioner is about to be reinstalled,I found that pressure onto the rear tensioner blade was sufficient to be able to double check that the cams were aligned correctly with the crank timing marks.Only once I was happy with this did I finally insert the tensioner spring and locking bolt.Double checking by turning the engine over by hand several times by using a homemade tool that bolts into the left hand side of the crank helped.Otherwise it is putting the gearbox into first and turning the engine over by rotating the back wheel...which is not very accurate. ____________________ Just talk bikes.What else is there?

I'm pretty sure exup engines are a different beast to the fz engine. Fz has shims 7 mm diameter and I seem to remember that fzr ones are much bigger .

OK so finally got this job buttoned up having been donated some shims by Nobby and the rest exchanged at Flitwick..
However post reassembly check shows they are still tight in places, in fact one or too are tighter!
I'm 99.9% sure I swapped correctly then I recalled I had to pry a little to get the intake cam out it was kind of stuck on the locating web.
Did I bend the intake cam?
Couldn't really notice any tight spots turning by hand but I wasn't really paying attention to that.
I ran it around on the starter a few times to see if it need to bed in but it made little difference - the intakes in questions should have been back up to six thou (0.15mm) on #4 but are still around three thou even after a shim swap.
Think I might plastigauge the top caps on the intake cam.

Engine purportedly only has 25K on it, but in reality anyone's guess.
That thought crossed my mind too - tricky buggers to measure with what I have..
Thinks .. stick a rod in first then zero against that length (dim-wit)
Might still plastique anyway for the cost. another new experience too.

Ok, new theory. Went through the ball-ache of taking the inlet cam out again to check the under-reading valves. The offending shims were the values I thought so no drama there. Then, on replacing, I noticed it wouldn't seat properly on the valve stem, I think because i'd dabbed them with assembly lube and there was some trapped air .. meaning that the inverted cup shim on top of the valve stem made a kind on pneumatic damper.
Could it be that when the valve is closed (point of clearance measure) the shim & bucket are being pushed up by the 'damper'. Pre-work the clearance was 6 thou on the dodgy ones and after reassembly with the sticky lube I could barely pass a 2 thou feeler through two of them.. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750
