Before you all shoot me down I know I need a licence but...! I'm old and passed my car driving test before 1991. Will my licence allow me to take my a1 and a2 test or do I need to apply for a new separate provisional motorbike driving licence?
Cheers

Hello. I saw your previous post where you stated that you passed your car test in 1990. If memory serves (and it might not), then you had a 2-part photocard and paper counterpart licence at the time. Therefore you probably have a photocard licence right now. If you look at the back of this, you will see a table with the entitlements you have (these are the ones with start and end dates). The ones that have no start or end dates listed against them are provisional entitlements. You can double check this list online at:

https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

I believe that if you log in, it will show that you have a provisonal motorcycle licence. This should suffice. You can test it out by booking a Mod 1 test right away using your licence information, and a CBT (the instructor will check before the training starts). You need a valid provisional motorcycle licence and a CBT before you can carry out a Mod 1, but you can only book a Mod 1 if you have a valid provisional licence. Computer says so. I wish I could do a Mod 1 again. I want to see how fast I can get around the cornering bit now, considering I did it at well over 50mph when I did mine Laughing but it's not allowed. Oh well.

Bhud, thank you for your detailed response.
Your memory does serve you correctly. I am not sure if I should be impressed or worried:-)

I've booked my bike theory test and I'll now go and check online to see if I can book my Mod 1. I know I need to do my CBT, but once I start the ball rolling I don't want to be having to wait for a licence to come through.
Cheers

You’ll be fine, old style license are ace.

Drive a large van, a mini bus even with a trailer. Glad I’m old.

You can't book a mod 1 without a valid theory pass, but, it won't let you book a theory without a valid licence. So, if you've managed to book the theory already, then you already have provisional motorcycle entitlement.

As an aside though. Unless you have a bike of your own suitable for taking the test, and the means of getting it to the test centre, don't book your own mod 1 or 2. The chances of a training school being able to drop everything to accommodate a student booked test in the aftermath of the plague are pretty slim
