I get that - but isn't it worse, in this case (you can see what I'm up against!) exposing her to the possibility of having someone install remote software?

If it's in restricted mode isn't there effectively a safeguard against this anyway, on a tablet at least? That's why we use it at work to stop people installing random rubbish on the iPads.

Whitelist (which is what I was describing my grandmother uses) is probably the way forwards; no way to bypass it and it's likely to be the main incoming communication. Not sure if it's possible to do something similar with a mobile?

Would be worth getting her a modern tablet then. That’s a VERY old OS, and it’s always best to stay up to date with regards to patching etc.

Usually.

A server needed updating so let it do it's thing = 1 totally screwed server needing to be restored from backups.

That’s a pretty small sample size. We patch about 700 servers a month and the number of issues we see can be counted on single fingers. Installing an iOS update is essentially risk free unless you’re running some weird enterprise app with specific requirements.

Server was replicated but even so.
MS Patches on HP Server running MS Windows and MS software shouldn't really screw to the point of needing a restore.
