Hi all,

I've just acquired a bike in Holland which is now sitting on the back of my bike trailer. I am going to bring it back to the UK. Does anyone know of an accurate guide for what has to happen now? It's very confusing looking at the DVLA and Dutch equivalent sites - in particular, do I need a certificate of conformity? The bike is a 1994 Yamaha Diversion 900 and the seller (who lives in Holland) is happy to help as needed. Thanks!!!

In the process of doing this myself for a vehicle without any documents (of EU origin)... this is from my thread on the matter:

For the record, I now have definitive answers.

Here's how it goes

Complete "Notification of Vehicle Arrival" form for HMRC. Pay any monies owed duty and/or VAT (n.b vehicles >10yrs, >6000kms and already had VAT paid within EU, there's no VAT to pay).

Get MOT

Send MOT, proof of purchase, proof of your identity, proof of address and EITHER original logbook/export papers OR a dating certificate to DVLA with V55/5 form and correct monies

Ride off into sunset.

So it looks like if on the off chance I can't get hold of the logbook, a quick call to the relevant owners club and a cheque for £30 should get me what I need. I still don't know what, if anything, I will owe to HMRC. The bike meets 2 of the 3 "no vat" criteria. They can calculate it on what they think the bike is worth. Given it's in a poor state, I'm hoping that as I paid nothing for it and it's pretty much only worth scrap value (honest Shifty ) I should get away without being bent over too much.

I think that'll do for now. Special mention to taffyTDM, I found the old thread about his import which set me on the right road. The rest I've pieced together from various sources and specialised importers.

Keep your eyes peeled for the restoration thread!

Thanks all Thumbs Up

I've completed the NOVA and got the conformation that no duty or VAT is owed. Nova can be done online using government gateway ID. Its straightforward enough. For the rest, you'll need to find an MOT station who will MOT on the VIN/frame number and it'll need insuring using VIN/frame number.

All mot stations can do the test. Make sure youve adjusted the headlamp beam (or black tape positioned to flatten the output horizon) to avoid easy fails. And make sure they record the odo in km, rather than miles.

Only about 4 insurance comapnies do chassis insurance. Swintons i used, but they all cost a fortune. Take a months policy then renegotiate once you get the registration on the open meerkat.
It so happened dvla were quick enough turning it around i managed to cancel the insurance policy within the 14 day period, but with the covids you probably wont be so lucky.

See my early posts for experiance bringing the tdm from germany Thumbs Up

Wow what a useful post!!! Thanks a million. You've saved me literally hours and hours of research Smile

I have the original logbook so it looks like the process will be extremely simple. You didn't have to get a certificate of conformity?
