Hello,

Say you had £3 or 4k to spend on a bike that will hopefully become more valuable as time goes on.

What would you guys choose?

I'm thinking about a Honda VFR400 NC30

I'm going to be storing it in the living room. Very Happy

Probably something like a BMW R100 - cafe racerers are tearing them all to shreds so they will be an endangered species soon

Mint very low mileage GSXR1000K1, RSV Mille, etc ....... early 2000's superbikes. Give it a decade and the people that couldn't quite afford them first time round will be old enough to be buying nostalgia toys.

Ducati 1000ss in senna colours.

The twin spark air cooled 2V desmodronic engines are the best thing since sliced bread.

Food for thought, thanks guys. Can't believe the price of nineties bikes let alone 80's

I used to love the Katana when I was about 15. Lets have a look.

Original Fireblade. It will be 40 in 12 years, which is when values seem to spike.

Late 80s stuff that was very "of it's time" and hasn't really seen a replacement for its niche. So jellymould CBR6 is out, VFR750 is out, they both got replaced by something with the same name but better everything.

4 cylinder cruisers like the Honda magna 750. Brick-engined BMWs. 125 dirt bikes. Any 2-stroke.

That's why many are crap investments, nostalgia tax has already kicked in. Late '80's GSXR's and early round eyed blades, mint prices are high enough I doubt there is much to be made. Stuff from then that hasn't started to climb hasn't climbed because it was shit and unloved at the time and it remains shit and unloved.

Early 2000's still hasn't gone silly (yet). Your target in a decade is people now aged between 35-45. In a decade they will be 45-55, right in that, "YAY, I finally have disposable income and wanna spunk it on the bike that I wasn't allowed/couldn't afford/made to sell due to contraception failure".

3-4k?

I'd spend 2k on the bike and invest the rest in myself by taking it on a bloody good holiday.

Edited to say I've just looked they are going for 5 grand now. I still think they will be worth something in the future purely due to rareness.

I can't believe what people are asking for these and the 1100 now, I thought about one as a cheaper alternative to the new Z900RS but they're pretty much deposit money for one of those now!

This thread is a good reminder to buy/try/enjoy those bikes you're wondering about before they get expensive and you don't have a chance.

When I was in my late teen/early 20s I was tempted by an early 80s UJM, Z650 in particular. I was never quite tempted enough to buy one, and the 33hp restriction was a factor. They were cheap then.

Now, £5k for a decent one.

This is why I bought my XR1200. I remember when they came out, I thought they looked incredible, but I was about 22 and the idea of paying £10k for a bike was unthinkable. Fast forward to my early 30s, they were £6k, and it looked like one of those things where prices would either skyrocket or drop. So I bought one.
It was good, but not as good as I hoped. I could have made it into what I wanted it to be, but really what I wanted it to be was a Buell. Sold it on after 18 months for £5.5k.
Not sure what prices are doing now. People are still asking £6-8k, but I don't think they're selling for that much. Doesn't help that Indian brought out their own flat tracker range starting at around £10k new.

You're not the only one who wishes they'd kept a few. I'd be sitting on a good few 10s of thousands by now. Denco tuned Kwak H2C and stock H2B? First gen GSXR750? RG500? First gen YPVS 350? Kwak 750 Turbo? But you've gotta ride 'em and move them on, unless you're Jay Leno.

Think I'd buy the lowest mileage, most immaculate bog stock Street Triple R, early model, and tuck that away for 40 years. If I thought I had 40 years still Laughing

And there's the crux. I just don't see bikes as an investment when you're talking about keeping 1 or 2 stashed away. The effect everyone's looking for is the LC350 effect, or, even better, the RG500 effect. To me, it looks like playing the lottery - something I've never done. If you work out initial purchase price (new) and storage costs over, say, 35 years, it looks good. In fact, it is good. But does it look that good in comparison with, say, normal stocks and shares investments over the same period of time? The LCs are going for about £12K, and the RG500s for about £40K. If you'd had one or two of these stashed away, you'd be quite happy by now.

Large collections are less speculative than small ones. The advantages of having a Jay Leno-like collection:

1) You don't have to know whether, say, a Honda Benly will be worth serious money in 35 years. All you have to do is get one or two of them in storage. Along with 1 or 2 Chinese 125s, as someone suggested, and 1 or 2 Fireblades, etc. The speculation part is reduced, and there is less exposure to risk.
2) Your storage and insurance costs do not increase incrementally by much every time you add a bike.

What this means is, Jay Leno might have a couple of 1200 Bandits and a couple of RG500s. 35 years after buying them new, he sells the Bandits at a small loss (after all, they will always have residual value as practically unused, mint-condition bikes), and the RG500s for a large profit. After getting rid of both the Bandits and the RGs, he is still in the money. Just not as much in the money as if he'd bought only RG500s.

I'm not Jay Leno but if I were, I'd probably not change a thing. A large collection of multiple vehicles is a much sounder investment strategy than just 1 or 2, or even 4 or 5.

I'd probably second that. Prices are climbing, its still a very good bike.

Having owned one, its obviously not a 916, but its very much greater than the sum of its parts....
