PostPosted: 13:43 - 27 Jul 2020    Post subject: Help - Can anyone identify this motor? Reply with quote

Hi Everyone, this is my first post here. I'm mainly a car guy (have restored a Mercedes 170V and a Ford Cortina - one of only two or three in Argentina, and the only one that isn's a Lotus version as far as I can tell).

I'm currently working on a bike (an old 49cc Paloma which was purchased because it will not get me killed while I learn the basics of bike riding and the mysteries of two strokes...), and I got, free with the Paloma, an old motor that I can't identify.

If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful. Thank you!

I apologize for the deformed images above - I haven't been able to fix. I placed the pics in as attachments as well in case that helps.

Thank you so much!

I'm not 100% certain but it looks very much like most of an old Lavalette belt drive motor.

Thanks for the help - much appreciated! Smile

That would make sense, as it came with a Paloma (Paloma used Lavalette engines), but I also have a Lavalette engine that came with the bike (and I have a manual for a 49 cc Lavalette), and though similar...it's different (shape of head, pattern of the cooling fins).

Perhaps it's a specific model of Lavalette engine I'm not familiar with? Or something else? If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them! And thanks!

Not quite all there. I think there should be a large external flywheel as well as all the ignition gubbins.

As it looked a bit similar ( but older) than the engine in the 1975 Mobylette
I fixed up for a guy a while back I did some googling and reckon its a

Mobylette AV3 circa 1950

Later AV engines had the decompressor valves on the top of the head

Did the Lavalette not have an off centre hole for the plug?

I'm am a little concerned for the pinky finger in the 2nd photo, did it become detached? Laughing

EDIT: Another vote here for the Moby engine, I wonder which French company ripped off which?
