Out of 16 birthdays today, not one is under 25 and only two under 30.

Also none of the 16 have posted for years.
Doesn't bode well for the BCF's survival.

Agreed.
I don’t believe the forum is entirely to blame.

I think we live in a different culture now from when we all came to the mighty BFC .

Look at a lot of the newbies that come here.
They come here and thier first post is “I WANT help NOW”
They expect members to give them information and half the time they haven’t even got the good manners to say please or thank you.

I certainly won’t engage with some oik who turns up like that.

The fact that we are focused on bikes and not peds means a lot of younger people won’t entertain this site.
Maybe we should have a Ped-Boi section?

I don’t engage with the I WANT NOW types, and maybe that makes me guilty of not helping the situation.
However there are worse than me on here who are happy to be rude to newbies and even tell them to “fuck off”.

Trolling by childish individuals could possibly mean that the occasional newbie gets caught up in the nonsense and decides to leave and stay away.

My Penny Coin Penny Coin .

EDIT: Also there is a lot of hate for 125’s on this site.
125’s are where the new generation of bike riders are going to come from.
Maybe a bit more tolerance towards 125’s and possibly a 125/L-plate section might help introduce new blood?
However, again there are those on here who would not be able to contain themselves and would spend thier time in that section telling newbies how 125’s are shit and they must get thier full license NOW!.

It's not BCF, it's motorcycling in general. Apparently there is a common joke that the average age of a motorcyclist in the UK increases by a year each year.

But forums are also dying a death. Considering how many posts we get every day, I'd say we're not doing too bad seeing as we have the dual drag factor of being about bikes and being an honest to goodness forum instead of a Facebook group or an Instagram story or whatever.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Probably true Laughing

I know when younger lads at work are ogling my bikes, when I tell them what they need to actually do and what age they need to be to ride my GSXR, they lose all interest infront of your eyes and proceed to wax lyrical about their shit eco-boost shopping cart Sad

Younger Women seem to show more interest though that maybe they just figure with so many toys I can afford a mistress Laughing

This has been a common wail since about 1970 though.
In the past it was the 'high costs' when a middle weight bike was now *over £1000*
When you could ride a 250 for ever on L's the average age was a lot lower and biking was less of a leisure activity.
Now I suspect a lot get more seriously into in middle age when kids are independent and mortgage is paid off - after dabbling in their teens or lusting after bikes for years.

All generalised of course there are plenty have had bikes since they first left school.
How does it relate to forum(s).
They tend to have a bell curve with a slow start, steep rise then steady decline but there can be further peaks (seems oddly familiar)
Nowadays facebook in particular seems more relevant to many especially since it works well if not best as a mobile app.

It ain't what it used to be in here... back int'day. Still, I pop by now and then. Haven't been on two wheels for a good while, so not had huge cause to engage in motorbike chatter. Need to remedy that...

It's slowly going the same way as British Bikers or whatever that forum was actually called.

It's more closed shop now with new people getting slated for the smallest transgression which in most cases is deserved but the little darlings can't stand criticism nowadays.

I don't go on any other forum for anything other than what that forum is for. What I mean by that is I'll go on the football forums to talk football but won't interact with people about various other shite like I do on here.

It is what it is and will die a natural death at some time, along with motorcycling in general.

Start talking up 125 scooters and you'd have lots of ppl on here, judging from London roads. Have to get all the posts auto-translated into 8 different languages... Wink

Facebook's fault.

Interesting to see how corporate mega-giants can rip the quirky individualism out of everything, cleverly getting us all into the boring dumbed out one-size-for-all version of things they want us to use for their own profits.. Even the internet isn't safe.

The forum's pretty good, in the circumstances. I think it will be here long after Facebook has had its day. Facebook is far too flaky, and it seems to supplant, rather than complement, real life. Someone can come to this forum and ask for help or advice from strangers without clicking a button that says they can become a "friend" of someone they're never met and don't know anything about, and without being told they have just "joined a group". They can interact and share ideas and thoughts with people with a common interest minus having to see or participate in or comment on all the mess, without having to see their face or snapshots of the highlights of their holiday, and without pretending to admire their artwork or care about their kid having the flu. They can begin posting or they can go away, to return or not to return. For all these reasons, the forum is a better fit into a standard experience of human life, where social networking is much more limited than Facebook and where relationships with people, professional or social, are only built up with time, effort and commitment.

Most youngsters don't seem to live in the same world I do though. Facebook is as real to them as real life is.

To be honest I think Facebook is past its time now too. It's all about instagram, snapchat and tiktok these days, and I feel like an 'old person' for having zero interest in joining those things.

Either way, it just seems like a load of mega-entities vying for all the users. The internet heyday is over.

You really think that?

I think it's just starting. I think soon except for some work and socialising you won't need to leave your house (which this lockdown has shown). I think in the future people will live in a semi virtual world as 3D stuff gets more and more realistic.

Maybe not quite up to the Matrix level but certainly in a Ready Player One parallel virtual reality world.

The internet has barely got off and running.

I'm glad I joined BCF before it all went south.

I wouldn't have me the life long friends that I have, if I hadn't.

Instagram can be ok. I mostly follow a few people that like walking byeways and a load of Enfield stuff. Get to see some really awesome photography and with the Enfield stuff you get to see what Indians are doing to their bikes without needing to read the lingo. The nature of it makes it really good as an app you can just browse for 5 minutes when waiting for something, no reading required. It gets a bad rep because morons use it to try and hook up or chav tarts use it to be a "model"..... you only see that shit if you want to.

The other 2 I can't grasp. I think TikTok is a platfrom for peados to snare kids? Snapchat I strongly dislike, why share a photo for a minute or whatever, that just says to me it's shit not worth sharing permanently.

I think the worst of them all though is LinkedIn, what a shallow shit show, pretending to be a professional service.

It's also because this forum isn't particularly mobile-friendly. Young folk generally won't interact with anything unless they can do it via their phone, so social media or TapaTalk sites will get pretty much all of that traffic.
It even affects us oldies, I used to use my personal laptop _far_ more regularly than I do these days, my mobile is pretty much my biggest window into the internet, so my visits to BCF have fallen dramatically.
I still make the effort to keep my toe in because I like the vibe here, but it's generally done on my work computer during break times and the like.

If using a mobile phone or tablet then turning signatures off greatly improves BCF.

Good point. I use my laptop at home and have a windows equivalent of a chromebook on the boat. I don't think I've ever used my phone to access BCF.

There again I only use my phone for e-mails and texts off wifie. No one ever calls me. Crying or Very sad

Nobody loves me, I'm going down the garden to eat worms. Laughing

Cliques eventually kill forums closey followed by power hungry mods. BCF is one of the more active forums I frequent though there is rarely any fresh meat usually the same old sour faces.

Another factor is the amount of hoops a young spunk has to jump through to get a full bike licence. Unless he really loves bikes and I mean more than finger blasting young ladies on the rear bench of his 1.0 Fiesta he's paying 4 figures to insure then he won't bother.

Shame really.

The Cansa clique certainly chased lots of new members away.
