Hi, hope everyone is doing ok Smile

Just wondering if anyone has any advice regarding the removal of a stiff cam holder?

I'm removing the cams from my CBR600 for a re-shim - first time I've done this so I'm taking it super slooow and following the manual by the letter - I removed the cam holder bolts in correct sequence and a quarter turn at a time so the cam holder came up nice and evenly and wasn't subject to distortion.

All bolts out and the cam holder is wiggling about but is not lifting off - I've heard that this is not unusual as it's probably getting stuck on the dowels.

I guess my only option is to just keep wiggling the thing until it lifts off - as wedging a screwdrive in there and prying it off might damage it - unless anyone has a pro-tip on getting this thing off?

Thanks for any advice Very Happy

Will damage it.

Just tap it gently, it will come off.

UPDATE! Smile

Got it off with a lot of wiggling backwards and forwards - took some time and patience but I didn't want to resort to levering it up with a tool or something because the general advice is that the cam holder is relatively fragile and should be treated gently.

A guy on the fireblades froum did use a screwdriver to pry it up - and I can see why he used that option because getting this thing off by hand took ages - but if you have the time and hit this problem I would personally try and get it off by hand and avoid sticking anything metal in there as the cam holder is fragile and expensive.

Thanks sickpup Smile - yep you are absolutely right - I didn't want to go down the screwdriver route so I just kept wiggling it and it finally shifted.

A broken cam holder would be fatal and you would need a new head as it is line bored fit. You cant swap holders between heads.

I knew it was a serious issue but didn't realise it could get that serious - thanks kramdra for the warning.

After taking the holder off I noticed some faint lines on the surface of the holder (which conceivably could be hairline cracks) around the number four bolt left hand side which made me think I might have damaged it - I referred back to some close up pics I took of the holder before I unbolted it - and the lines were there before unbolting so nothing to do with me guv.

I bought the bike with 9k on it from a dealer and I'm pretty confident that this is the first time the cam holder has been removed since it came out of the factory.

I think the lines are just a cosmetic artefact dating back to when the holder was originally cast and are not actual hairline cracks.
