Hi all,

I am trying to figure out how to convert my imported bike speedo to UK MPH from Eurododge killer meters per hr in order that friendly Mr MOT Man will give me a piece of paper saying "pass" instead of "fail".

It's a 1995 Yahama Diversion 900 (in green, if that matters).

Anyone have any ideas how to do this (other than setting the bike on fire and using the insurance money to buy a UK specced one)? Ideally simple and easy.

Ta!

Self-adhesive clear vinyl stuck over the top, marked with a permanent pen (with numbers) at intervals of 10mph.

Didn't think it was an MOT point.

Anyways if cable driven you want one of these, stickers are an ugly bodge, probably worth searching as that's the first I found and they used to cost alot less https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Speedo-Drive-Unit-Speedo-Conversions-MPH-to-KMH-Speed-Converter/302181683608?hash=item465b6e9198:g:tF0AAOSw5Xxeococ

If it's already been used in the UK and doesnt have one of those or the horrible stickers, then it probably already had one and the PO removed it to claim the entire mileage was in KM.

I've passed a few MOTs with Km clocks - not sure if that's my MOT guy turning a blind eye maybe but it was never even mentioned as an issue in passing.

As mentioned, doesn't matter if it's MPH, KPH or feet per second, speedo isn't part of an MOT.

C&U might be a different issue, if anyone cares.

You don't even need a speedo for an MOT, but you do need one, marked in mph, to be road-legal. There are a few ways of doing it:

- external overlay sticker/markings
- "speedo healer"
- replace speedo face
- replace complete clock-set.

It looks like the clocks go for around £50 on eBay, so not especially cheap.

My old Thundercat was converted from LHD with a replacement headlight and replacement speedo face - this meant it showed speed in mph but the odometer still counted in km.

My 01/02 plate tdm (long story) passed its uk test with km clocks. In fact, they can even (and should) change the pass cert to record the odo in kms. I think its only vehicles under 10 years old that need a dual reader or a calibrated conversion

MPH = KPH x 0.62.

😉

Or we could take the easy route and rejoin the EU going fully metric. Fuck maths.

I had a LHD classic car with km speedo for a year or so, no problems with the MOT.

There's only really 2 speeds you need to know:

100kmh = 62mph, for NSLs,
so
50kmh = 31mph, for 30 limits

40 and 50 are therefore a bit between those two.
Mways and DCways, you've already got your own idea of how fast you'd like to go and it's probably north of 100.

Oh, there are a couple of other speeds to keep in mind:
over 125kmh = over 78mph = potentially 3 points
over 160kmh = over 100mph = potential ban
