Wife had her Cagiva Canyon stolen and recovered. Cosmetic and the ignition done. They hot wired it to start and rode around on it for a bit.

Anyway, I replace the ignition, wire for wire connected. The ignition works fine to start the bike and lights come on fine, bur when you turn the ignition off the bike still runs and you have to turn it off by the kill switch. All the other electrics turn off, but not for the engine. You have to use the ignition to turn the bike back on again.

Where do I start to look?

Your looking for the kill wire connection into the key switch

All I can find is shitty grainy diagram
here
https://circuitswiring.com/cagiva-canyon-600-wiring-diagram/

but it looks like a typical AC CDI setup which shorts source coil output
to ground to stop the motor
The kill switch has one wire to ground and one to the CDI which supports this theory
and I think it uses a green wire from the CDI for this but check

This same wire should also be connected to the ignition switch where it gets grounded at turn off
This gives the two options stop the motor

I'd guess the link between the kill switch and ign switch is broken
or the ignition switch has a bad ground wire

Always test and check with a meter of course before making final connections

I reckon its like this, but using my own colours !
as I dont know Cagivas conventions

Light Blue from CDI
Red link wire
Green to ground

This makes sense. Perhaps in the course of replacing the ignition switch, the ground connection necessary to stop the motor was either damaged or overlooked.
