well it looks like I am going to shortly own two bikes. I currently have a little Honda Vision 110 that I cart around on the back of a motorhome but i am also hopefully going to be buying a KTM Duke 390 or something similar.

Just trying to get my head around insurance. My current insurer (Devitts through Post office) pretty much told me I would have to apply for a multi bike policy so I guess I would be starting again (the current policy for the scooter is about four months in) but retaining my NCD

So as far as I can tell if you take out a separate policy for the new bike you cant use your no claims from the existing one. Is that right? So I did a multi bike quote with Carole Nash which came out at £225 for both. However an individual policy for the Duke using my 9+ years NCD was just £65 fully comp on Go Compare and if I do a new quote for the Vision with no NCD i can it elsewhere for about £80. I normally pay about £70.

All seems a bit odd to me. What do others do? And how the hell can a hooligan Duke 390 be cheaper to insure than a Honda Vision? Laughing

I just started a new separate policy for the 250 since I'll probably be swapping out the Enfield in the not too distant future and will want to use its NCD on the next bike. Spreads out the renewal to different months.

I think on MC policies you can only use the NCD on one policy.

Using it twice on separate machines will produce a cheaper outcome.
But combined the NCD would be shared.

When I got a second bike the broker I used advised separate policies for each machine.

That all maybe pants now as rules are revisited frequently.

Both bikes I have just now and on separate policies with different brokers. (Not checked who the underwriters are.)

I have both bikes on one policy with Bennets, very easy to arrange, low cost, superb to deal with and get discounts for garaging, no pillions, agreed mileage and IAM membership.
I was with ERS for years but Bennetts came out at about a hundred quid cheaper.

They will probably infuriate you with a swingeing fee to cancel the existing policy then charge you more for the multibike new one.
Try Carol Nash they have always come out as good as anyone for my two.
Will never forgive Bennets for charging me a cancellation fee 2x the amount might have been returned from unused period.
It would have been better to just say nothing and let it expire but once they knew they were like a terrier after a rat.

WTF! I was just thinking I would just cancel the current scooter policy and start two new ones with the NCD being transferred to the KTM. I assumed having only had the scooter policy four months I would get some money back! Are you saying they will charge me or the pleasure of cancelling it?

It was Carol Nash I got the multi bike quote from and it came out way more expensive than two separate policies. Trouble is it doesnt look like you can use comparison sites for multi bike policies (unless someone knows different) so it will mean going through each providers website.

To be honest if I can get the scoot insured for £80 and the KTM with NCD for £65 then ill just do that providing I can cancel the current policy.

Bikesure, I have 4 bikes on one policy with them. This years renewal was £189, I didn't bother to argue. Especially as last year it cost me Penny Coin to add the bandit to the insurance.

It's harder to comparison shop with multi-bike policies.

If you live in a relatively high insurance area, you need to comparison shop to get a decent quote.

Multi-bike has never worked out great for me in London. It worked one year with 3 bikes, but come renewal time, it was cheaper to reactivate the dormant renewals and their corresponding NCDs.

Also worth bearing in mind that if you have an insurance claim, you only lose NCD on the policy it occurred on, and not the other policies. You still need to inform them, but you don't lose the discount because you didn't claim. If your NCD works out to a big discount (if you have a high insurance bike) then that's quite valuable.

Multi-bike policies usually require you to have the same specifics for both bikes, e.g. comprehensive, commuting included/excluded etc.. When I had two bikes one got used mostly for commuting and the other for weekend rides only; a multi-bike policy was way more expensive than two separate policies for me because the weekend toy was seeing a big uplift on the assumption it'd be used for commuting. Ended up sticking the NCD on the weekend toy and insuring the commuter with no NCD (which was still really cheap actually).

The other thing is different insurers can be better value for different machines; the one who is cheapest for your KTM might be pricey for the Vision and vice versa.

The only real benefit to a multi-bike policy is admin hassle is reduced, otherwise I would go with two separate ones.
