Got a real problem with brambles / weeds of the bloody hard to kill variety.

Anyone got a recipe or know of a good propriety make that does the job?

Fed up of the pathclear / resolva type products that do bugger all.

Glphosate usually sold as round up.
What you can get from a garden centre is very weak you might have to do them 2 or 3 times - but it is slow acting allow a good two weeks before they look obviously unwell.

Roundup (Pro) Active, available in litres or larger:

HOWEVER you have a problem with the time of year. I would expect there to be some effect, though.

https://www.monsanto-ag.co.uk/roundup/roundup-amenity/difficult-weeds/brambles/

I've used this stuff a fair bit, from saplings to ivy to brambles to ordinary weeds, and it is good, and cost-effective.

It's good for almost everything apart from horsetail, which it is hard to get success on, IME.

Follow the instructions carefully and take notice of rain and the season.

EDIT:You want 20ml/litre of water for your tough weeds.

As with all things good there comes a risk.

Do not get it on your skin, do not inhale.

Roudup was once considered very safe. It isn't.

Brambles are best cut to the ground and sprayed when near to full of new leaves....or dig up most of the roots and Thermite.Shifty
Repeated attacks needed for most 'weeds'.

It's pretty good stuff, and any safety issues are very small. As you say, don't inhale it and if you do get it on you, wash it off. It's been around and used, in quantity, for nearly 50 years.

I suspect that much of the "problem" is people jumping on the compensation bandwagon, and the association with GMO crops (these being crops genetically engineeed to be unaffected by glyphosphate, so that the entire crop may be sprayed with glyphosphate to kill weeds but not crop).

Brambles? Great fun when your rotavator hits a crown of the things, launches itself off and up, then "runs on" on its tines until you can throw the anchor out....

There was a chap on t' radio 4 one afternoon discussing his interest in brambles. They normally thrive where a corpse has been lying or buried.

Did F. West ever visit your gaff?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/5q2xGXDZv0S7hg3KQl11vNg/plant-detectives-how-bramble-and-co-can-help-solve-crimes

Glyphosphate is the thing.
But it might be too late in the season now. It works best on growing plants. (Systemic action)

Plus one on care. It is absorbed through leaves and skin. It will make you ill 🤮.

The garden centre stuff is a bit impotent so I use half the recommended amount of water in the dilution.

Depends on the weeds, anything with substantial roots like nettles or docks will shrivel up if you put that sort of stuff on but just sprout from roots again.
Glypho has a systemic action so it goes into the root and collapses that too.

Mixing alkaline bleach with vinegar is rather risky my dad did something similar and produced mustard gas nearly killing himself.
One will neutralise the other but produce heaven knows what toxic by products.

Water and some sort of salt.

Enough salt will kill almost anything, but good luck ever growing on that land again.

White vinegar works on some plants. You need to use quite a bit though.

I reluctantly resorted to Weedol on the tiny front lawn to eliminate dandelions and plantain; basically any so-called broad-leaved weed. Two applications and job done for twelve months so far. I believe it's a hormone which makes the weeds burn themselves out. In the back garden I've mainly hand-weeded, particularly the wild geranium, and tried to fill the bald patches with grass seed. I hadn't realised that there are different "lawn grasses," some of which are taller than the existing lawn mix. I've had to root out some of the new grass which was growing in tall tufts. I should think brambles will need digging out.
