Would like a tv box for playing videos, films etc from sd card. Able to play the large 4k 60fps videos from my osmo action would be ideal, but that might be asking too much my old pc struggles with them.

What to get?

Not an android box.

Given that its taken the latest Xbox and nVidia cards to even touch 4k60, a no name box of piss isn't going to achieve that.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I'm pretty certain you know this already, Paddy, but that's not an entirely fair comparison.

The low end 10 series cards would do 4k60 video playback just fine, I'm sure the older 970's and 980's would have too though I was hardly doing PC stuff myself back then.

It's a different kettle of fish to generating video game graphics.

In theory the latest Pi's can support 4k60, though when we've tried at work we've struggled.

Oh for sure, but absolutely no low end box is going to output 4k well. My PC, even trying 4k45/50fps its almost at the limit.

Whilst its not a fair comparison, OP is cheap.

I had forgot about this thread.

Arm chips have had hardware x264 decoding for years. Andriod with vcl and a recent processor will be more than adequate. I was looking at the more expensive ones. I dont mind spending upto £150 for this.
I dont like the chromecast, but I see they have a newer"4k ultra" one for 70. Id prefer something with a micro sd card slot.

Consoles and pc's are irrelevant. My 2013 pc can play 4k60fps fine. Paddy, your pc must be rubbish.

I work in the broadcast industry, and I can tell you that the decoding overhead on 4k video is disproportionately larger than HD. This is because the codecs are geared towards hardware decoding, and 1080p video. h.265 support is not there yet, and even if it was it's there to reduce necessary bitrate for the same video quality and not to reduce decoding overhead.

You might find something that does it, but I suspect it'll be flaky. Even the professional broadcast gear is not as evolved as it is for HD video.

Laughing Theme Hospital maybe. I could scrape 4k60, but its of no use on a 1440p monitor.

and no, its far from 'rubbish' Wink

Why an Android box? How about something like a Lenovo M900 Tiny?

Was able to pick one up a few months ago with an i5/8GB/256SSD for about 120 quid. Install Kodi and a usb-to-SD reader, and you're sorted.

I work with 4k video. Rendering and recording is still problematic even with a dedicated GPU. Streaming 4k, through a cheapy android made with cheap parts, recipe for aids.

Bit mouthy for a guy who lubes his tyres.

You have absolutely no idea what I do with my days Laughing just to capture 4k video requires a dedicated card in my stream pc, it costs 4 tikes the 1080p capture and requires you to be running a stupid high end card just to output to streams at 4k, I don't, because 4k doesn't benefit me, but it takes power and a decent processor. I can run 4k video on my phone, but I doubt it would output to my big screen nicely without cooking my device

But what you want, but I think it's a false economy, buy a decent non Android bloated device.

The Firestick 4k is a cheap android device that works admirably.

Also, decoding and encoding are very different, less 'grunt' is needed for decoding.

Also, there is no such thing as a cheap chinese android box in the sense that you mean. They are all based on ARM SoC's that even the most expensive boxes are based on.

Anyhow, the Firestick 4k is able to output 4k @ 60fps.

But is it actually 4k? As far as I know that stick was debunked a long time ago as its not natively pushing 4k and just super sampling whatever is fed in to it to ease overheads. Hence the spicy chip in it.

Again the Poundland king tries to tell someone how to do their job because he knows better after watching a Youtube video or two. Well done Kramda, again you are insulting someone inaccurately because they know better than you. Thumbs Up

Have you looked at the Nvidia Shield TV? I have a 2017 model and it has no trouble handling 4K 10bit HDR content via plex. It play perfectly on my 4K LG and will easily transcribe down to 1080p for the other TVs around the house.
