Hi all. Been riding since August now, done about 2000 miles. Yesterday I took a wrong turn and ended up in an empty car park to turn around, but before I did I decided to practive my U turns and figure of 8s. I was really surprised because I was making really tight turns feeling really stable. Made me wonder if I really need to pay £700 for lessons?

£700 just for Mod 1... probably not. Some money on lessons from a proper instructor is always worth it. That and you don't have to get bogged down with all the insurance issues if you use a school's bike for the test.

Ask a local school to assess you... some have cheap "taster" courses or might let you just pay for an hour.

I'd say there's a difference between the words confidence and ability. Training schools are there to make sure the two align and get you through the tests, especially for a first timer (from smaller to larger machine).

Yes you can do it yourself, but as gets continuously raised the insurance question is a cost to overcome; and then transport.

Where are you getting that figure from (£700)? You mention it like we know what's going on in your world. There's more than one training school, and pay-as-you-go is always an option with most. Training > Mod 1 > Training > Mod 2.

Module 1 training is always miniscule, and most of the time you spend out on the roads. Training schools can only book certain slots on actual test DVSA test pads so you'll never spend more than an hour or two on one, shit really.

Controlling a small bike that you use often is slightly different to controlling a larger one.

£700 was for Mod 1 and Mod 2 Smile But I had the attitude that if I pass mod 1 first then its less tuition time. But insurance would be a problem yes... Okay guess I'm just going to be broke for a while.

Other quick question, I know you can take the test on a 125, but you get a different category of license? Does that give you an A1 or an A2? I would be perfectly happy with an A2 license, I don't need full A license, so if its cheaper and easier to pass on my own bike that would be fine with me. If it just gives me the ability to ride a 125 without L plates... pretty useless.

That's your answer to the A1 category.

Bunch of info on the A2 and A categories (basically go through a training school, but do read is as your current understanding of how the license system works is a bit off).

Don't rely on any quote as it all depends on how you do. Fail either one of the tests even once and the costs increase. Ask the question regarding what happens if you fail a test (can you resit without training, or do they require another half-day of training?). Ask the questions before you hand over any money. Switching schools if you end up unhappy with one will cost more as the "new" school would want to see you ride before allowing you to commit.. basically back to square one. Find a well reviewed one, and one that actually trains you on a DVSA test pad for Module 1 as not all of them do.

Regarding how much training you'll need that's up to the school, but most of your training throughout will be on the road riding. Four days is about average I would say (assuming that your school does the whole 9 am -4/5 pm thing for a full day too).

You know you can just book the test on your 125, right? And that it's just £15.50?

How dumb do you need to be NOT to just try it anyway?

Most people have a lot of bad habits that will cause them to fail.
Such as not doing enough life savers which tends to be favourite.

Its worth a few lessons to iron them out first.

Thumbs Up

What he said.

Give it a go and see what happens. Presumably you've got some idea of whether or not you can do the required maneuvers. It will work out cheaper than paying for a lesson where the instructor will tell you that you can do what's required for module 1.

If you pass then it's a big success. If you don't then ah well, you'll know what they're looking for and what skills you need to brush up on.

The value of an A1 license is that a) you won't have to ever repeat the your CBT and b) it gives you experience of mod 1 and mod 2 tests.

If you're going to pay for training and go down the A2 route then you might as well get your full A license. You can then go and get an A2 bike if you want but it will give you the choice to ride whatever you want in the future without having to jump through more hoops.

You will also need a valid Theory Test pass before you can take your MOD 1

You'll need your theory test and CBT certificates with you on the day and valid long enough to also do Mod 2.

You can just rock up on your 125cc having paid the £15 or whatever, just remember to look over your shoulder before setting off on any manoeuvre (pretend you're in a supermarket car park and need to check for anything moving in any direction)

They usually explain what you did wrong if you fail and if you were 99% there you may well get given a second chance then and there (I did on the brake test)

However you will have an A1 licence letting you ride only a 125cc without L plates on roads and motorways.

If a friend follows you to the test centre with a bigger bike on which you're insured then you can do your test on that and get your A2 or A (depending on your age and what bike you use)

Wonko, you didn't fail, you just didn't get up to the required speed for the 'emergency stop' exercise. You get 2 attempts at that and the hazard avoidance manouvere If your speed is low (unless you knock a cone over or skid to a stop!)
