Try disabling Adblock Plus and see if that fixes it.

Maybe it's lost in the noise, or I've had a funny five minutes, but can you post the URL of site you're visiting?

Still try completely disabling Ad Blocker Plus to see if the problem goes away.

Because you don't know what an URL is? Because you don't understand the software? Because you've got an infection in your testicles? Because you're not polite enough to get help elsewhere?

Something like that, I'd guess. Still, I did try.

Doh!

In which case something's gone wrong with the file handling in Firefox. Data going back and forth across the Interwebs is usually accompanied with a header containing the data type. For example:

application/octet-stream = binary file
application/json = text
text/html = more text
text/javascript = and text again
etc.

Somehow Firefox has forgot it's meant to handle something (probably one of the last two in the example) and thrown it back to the operating system. Which then goes "ah! text, you want notepad I guess..."

Okay, done some digging and this seems to be the most likely explanation:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/28535603/google-chrome-forcing-download-of-f-txt-file

tl;dr malicious javascript being spat out as a file instead of being run by the browser. Safety feature, working as intended.

I wondered why I'd not seem such a thing before but I run Ad Block, uBlock Origin and a DNS filter so I don't see most advertising domains, certainly not the iffy ones.

This does raise the question as to why bcf is chucking out malicious code.

I've had it a couple of times. I understand it's a workaround to stop sites which have inadvertantly included a potential malware issue executing that code.

Seems to come from third party advert referrers so it's a lottery depending which ad they put up and if that ad contains the code in question.

I've had it a couple of times navigating ebay and youtube on firefox in linux debian.

I blame it on the Coronavirus contained in the MotoGP 2020 thread.

If donk was still here he'd be blaming it on China or whichever racial grouping he was most unhappy with at that time.
