So I currently have an a2 from a foreign country (outside EU (cant exchange for UK a2)) at 18. Currently, still 18 but will be 19 in May 2021. I was told by police that I could ride an a2 for 1 year then I had to apply for a UK one. I took his word and got myself an mt07 (restricted) but to my shock, I couldn't get any insurance quotes. One online for 11k a year. Another insurance company told me that because in the UK the minimum age for a2 is 19, no matter where you got your licence from you can't use it in the UK until you are 19. Haven't seen any laws on this so if anyone knows anything that would be great. What I am planning is buying an r6 in may. The reason is on some forums I have seen people saying you can restrict it to a2 power. I would restrict it on the road and de-restrict it from track use. Now before anyone judges, I have had professional racers teach me how to properly handle heavy bikes / powerful bikes so don't come at me with the 'you are a student you don't know sh!t' attitude. Don't get me wrong I am far from being where I want to be but do not judge from me being a student. Will I get insurance even if the r6 can be street legal? If not what would your tips be on which bike to get to restrict to 47hp to be able to de-restrict for track riding and restrict for daily use? Cheers.

Don't you need to think about an ACU licence for track day racing because of your age?

Presumably if you need a fast bike for the roads that has to be restricted you have considered how much of a ballache it is going to be to have to de-restrict a restricted machine and then re-restrict it every time you go near a track?
Would it not be better to buy something ratty for the public roads that is relatively cheap to insure (your age is going to go against you for cheap insurance premiums, even if you get a Piaggio Zip 125) and spend some decent money on a bike that is set up for the track?

Always, always, always get an insurance quote before you commit to buying any bike

It takes literally minuets to do, and will instantly tell you if it is affordable

You can’t ride an R6 on a A2 licence, regardless of whether it is restricted or not. Its original power is too high.

I don't know about a licence. I'll research that. That does seem like a doable option. I have a friend with a restricted mt07 and all he does is screw a throttle limiter on and off. If I can't do an r6 I can a cbr650r which is at 93.9 hp right at the barrier for restrictable bikes. that does seem reasonable although how much would a bike like that be I have no clue. Thank you though!

If you cannot exchange it for a UK license you are going to have to pass the test again to gain a uk license. Once your year in the uk is up you don't have a legal license.
