So the young Ens just started high school . Already they are getting sent home to work so we need to get her a laptop .

Problem is I'm fucking clueless . Realistically I want to be spending under 300 quid all my misses said is it needs a webcam

Won't be playing any games or anything it's just for school work.

What should I be looking for ?

Does it have to run Windows? A chromebook is usually cheaper and easier to manage, but is a bit more limited in what it’ll do. Speak with the school and see what they recommend with regards to requirements.

A good Chromebook will run Office stuff. I'd prefer Windows, but don't lay them to rest just yet!

Just the web/Android versions though which may or may not be good enough.

For Windows based you really need 8GB RAM as a minimum, so something like this?

I am wducation based as a job, they are fine for student based stuff.

I would suggest they check with the school, some are shit and still dont have decent online storage presense and management. Rolling Eyes

That one you linked is Windows 10 S, which is tragic.

It's trivial to switch out of S mode.

Like I said, Chromebooks will be easier to manage etc, just check with the school for their requirements first. If all their stuff is online then great, if they have windows apps to use, a Chromebook won't suffice.

At the start of this academic year we were in exactly the same boat; two kids (12 and 10) needing a laptop each for use at school. Over the 'home schooling' period they had used their iPads which had got them by but were not ideal; their school uses MS365, Teams, OneNote etc and the iOS versions of these were not fully functional, so we looked for Windows laptops to ensure ultimate functionality.

In the end we got two of these. They have been in use since mid-September and so far, so good. Battery life could be longer but the school does provide power outlets for charging. Build quality is a touch lightweight but they have survived unscathed to date.

I went down the chrome book route.

Its great tech for the money, easily configurable to keep the kids from the weirder end of the Internet, plus has a battery life akin to a Nokia 3310.

Ours is a lenovo brand (Chinese), which I have to say is excellent.. I have 2 or 3 of these dotted around the house tbf.
