It's that time of year again and I'm currently shopping for insurance again. Deep joy.

I was on the point of purchasing a policy from Principal Insurance. I clicked on "T&Cs" before "Buy" though, and was startled to find a clause stating that there would be no cover at all for theft unless my bike was secured with a third-party lock. This was despite my stating that the bike would be stored overnight in a locked garage (although I do routinely use a disk lock, I never state this on insurance quotes as I don't want to be potentially held to account because of it). I live in an OK area, and have never experienced a theft - so it was a bit surprising. Needless to say, Principal has gone in the bin.

Anyway - my point in posting was this: if my bike was to get nicked, and I put a claim in, how is the insurer going to know one way or another whether the now-missing bike had a lock on? Have they thought this through?

They wouldn't I guess, although they could possibly demand proof you at least own such a security device? I have photographed my security setup in case I am ever questioned on such things.

You are overlooking "Voice Risk Analysis", the lie detectoring of claimants. Fake a stammer, you'll be ok!

I think they put lots of exclusions in things in the hope of having a tick list of bullet-dodges to work through to avoid paying up. Crying or Very sad

As a follow-up:
I just bought my new policy via "Wickedquotes" - turns out the underwriter is the same as used by "Principal" (Novitas, on behalf of Aviva). This time the T&Cs specify no payout for theft claims if my steering lock isn't applied. I decided I could live with that.

(Even harder for an insurer to enforce than insisting on an external lock, surely...)

. Unless the bike is recovered with no damage to the lock...
