Hello folks,

I'm new to customize bikes and thought I would try to change handlebar on my bike, so I bought a new one. Only to found out that the stock bar I have on my 2009 Kawasaki vn900 custom is directly screwed in the steering head on two points 90mm apart and the new one needs a clamp mount. Got from the retailer that it would fit my bike and model.

So my question is regarding these clamp mounts, I found a lot of different ones, are two single clamps enough to really secure the handleblar? Or would the best be 1 big clamp mount, or even sending the new handlebar back and look for one that is made like that stockbar?

Anyone else who had to do this change or is it always like this when buying a new bar, the need for some extra parts to fit it?

Adding this link if it helps to see how the handlebar is attatched to the steering head.

It depends how far you want to go, a serious custom job you probably ought to be looking at slab yokes with that style of bike.
If you just want to bolt on stock 'custom' items there are plenty of options and provided you get them from reputable sellers they will know their stuff with a mainstream bike like that

Yeah, either a double or single handlebar clamp should be capable of safely securing your handlebars*

Just make sure that the new clamp and bars are installed correctly (the clamp bolts might require a specific tightening sequence and torque rating).

*provided the clamp is a good quality part sourced from a reputable company with good reviews (not some dubious outfit importing cheap quality, badly designed parts).

Assuming you have all of the above in place then the choice of single or double clamp is down to personal aesthetics.

Two clamps are the "normal" way of attaching handlebars. There are usually two size options. The vast majority of handlebars are 7/8 of an inch in diameter. Some custom bikes use 1 inch diameter bars.

If you fit "apehanger" bars with a very extreme lift (hands above shoulder height), there is some risk you could rotate them forwards in the clamps under heavy braking due to the amount of leverage. These may benefit from cross-pinning.

The standard setup is rather unusual, so anything to replace it is likely to be model-specific. So expensive.

I would just stick with the stock ones. If you want to modify it, you would need to convert the top yoke to normal bar clamps, then find some bars that put your hands in the right place and don't touch the fuel tank. That will be difficult, looking at how the standard bars are set up.
