Evening,

I'm still looking for a winter hack because I'm a fussy bastard and everything seems overpriced right now.

My mate is considering parting with his 1996 Bandit 600S. It has no MOT, needs new tyres and a battery. Circa 15k on the clock but not used much over the last few years. I know the brakes and fork seals are good because I sorted them last year. It's not a minter cosmetically in that it has a little rust around the frame (nothing too bad) and some scuffs and fading on the plastics. It does run ok, I rode it little last year and all seemed fine.

I have an idea of what I think it's worth paying for it and what I'd like to pay (not a lot) but curious to see what others think before I make a cheeky offer. I appreciate hard to say without seeing the bike but just looking for ballpark ideas as eBay sold listings vary significantly.

Cheers

2-3 hundred IMO. Same again for good tyres and battery and whatever other consumables it needs then figure on a brakes and carb overhaul to make it reliable through the winter.

Three-fiddy. Sorry, Paddy. Rolling Eyes

Theoretically £500 or thereabouts.

Then again I've probably lost on every P/X I've ever done, or over-paid for the bike. Laughing

Please show us where you can get a 96 Bandit with 15000 miles, that only needs a battery and tyres for £200

Please show us? You speaking for the entire forum now? If you care to check back, most of my bikes are documented here so it's not hard to find.

I've had four 600 Bandits, 2 Mk1's and 2 Mk2's. £300 was the most I paid for any one of them (from a member here) and the best of them was a 2004 model (attached pic) for which I paid £165. Needed a £70 set of forks to be roadworthy.

As it's a mate I think being fair is more important, especially if they're a bit clueless to the value. £500 seems not unreasonable if you take it "as is". The burden is on you then to get it sorted and deal with any unforeseen issues. If that bike was being p/x probably get £400 for it I'd expect.

Bike values have changed a LOT in the last two to three years. The era of the sub £1000 bike with an MOT is well and truly gone, and the hacks that we used to get are now £1000-2000 instead.

I reckon £800 for a bike with no MOT ish?

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Gumtree has a few nails at less than that which you'd probably get a decent deal on with some haggling.

But I agree in general with your point. The days of finding decent £1000 bikes is well and truly gone. Just over 10 years ago I paid ~£1200 for a pretty mint CBR600. I'd hate to think what a similar bike would cost me now.
