Hi all, want to buy a first bike: 2020 Honda Rebel or 2019 Yamaha Bolt R Spec( these guys https://casinos-advisor.com/ help me to choose good website where to play for real money).

I’ve been reading and researching for my first bike but what better place to look than people who have been there and done that.

Those are the two bikes I’m leaning between. I love the cruiser style and I’ve read/watched great reviews on the Rebel but can’t find a whooole lot on the Bolt.

Any first hand accounts or advice? I’m 5’8. I’ve sat on both bikes and both were very comfortable. Again...this will be my first bike so any and all advice is welcome!

Well hello! I'm glad I got to you first Smile I have a Rebel, what an excellent choice...

Seriously though, there's a bit of difference between that and the Bolt. What are you expecting to do with one? If it's the open road you crave then the larger engine on the Yamaha would be useful but if you're more urban then very quickly realise how hot an air-cooled V-twin can get in traffic.

Also bear in mind the Rebel is only a CB500F in an ill fitting cruiser jacket. The Harley boys won't acknowledge you exist. At least with a Jap V-twin they'd be kind enough to spit on your grave Very Happy

I like/ride cruisers. I had never heard of the bolt before.

Do some test rides and decide. I'm assuming the Honda is cheap, because it looks pretty shit.

Me neither and I've just gone off looking for power figures aaaand....there aren't any Laughing anywhere. Which probably means there's not a whole lot of power. Found a quoted torque figure of 59ftlbs at 3000rpm so I guess it's just a really tuned for low grunt rumbler of a thing.

Which will be why they didn't list it Laughing

One wonders why they wouldn't just drop a few ponies and make the thing A2 compliant Rolling Eyes

I don't think Yamaha sell the Bolt in the UK. The closest is currently the SCR950 which is basically the same thing, different subframe.

Looks a bit like a budget version of the FTR 1200, shame it doesn't have similar power figures

I know EasyX likes his, but I've ridden other bikes with the same engine as the Rebel and it's a very . . . well, "ordinary" engine. There's no character to it really (not sure if an aftermarket exhaust helps). It's smooth, probably very reliable and probably very efficient. But it's probably not very exciting.

If you're after a reliable and efficient bike I'm sure the Rebel is fantastic. If you're after something a bit more characterful, I'd be looking at a v-twin of some description, but the remark above about air cooled lumps and traffic is valid if you're spending any time bumbling about in town.

Can't comment on the Bolt - don't know anything about it I'm afraid.

What about a Triumph Bobber? Should sound gorgeous, looks lovely and if what I read is to be believed, actually rides well too. I've sat on one and it was uber comfy.

Is it a twisted subframe?

It'd end up very twisted if I got hold of one! Too heavy for my Pisky-like form Smile

Regarding the Rebel I haven't gone full-system and dropped the cat - I can't see a retune wringing an awful lot more out of it - but it does sound a lot better if you drop the stock exhaust/slip-on and... well you could just drop it entirely but I think it looks nicer with a simple pipe in place.

I'd miss it terribly in the City if I got something bigger but hand me anything >650 at the moment and I'd snap yer arm off Wink

That would make it the Honda for me.

That was my initial thought but isn't there a maximum engine size you are allowed to ride on A2?

We're currently considering a Rebel 500 for my wife (when she passes her test hopefully in December). She's doing full DAS so it's not because it's an A2 bike she's interested she just likes the cruiser look and the Rebel 500 is one of the lightest and lowest seat height cruisers out there (she's pretty small). I've read and watched many reviews on the bike and everyone sings its praises.

We went to look at one at the dealer and even the sales guy said we'll definitely want an aftermarket exhaust on there, he even admitted they sound pretty awful as standard without one and said they usually supply and fit a Lextek abomination as standard with most sales. Personally would be looking at Black Widow for something cheap or Yoshimura for something a little bit more premium. Those Lexteks are nasty in my opinion.

You probably won't know the answer to this question until you're a few months into owning your first bike but as the others have asked what exactly is it you are going to want from your first bike? If you're any sort of a thrill-seeker this might not tick all the boxes but then I'm guessing if you're looking at the cruiser sector you're probably not in the market for a super quick bike. I think the Rebel 500 will suit my wife perfectly but I wonder if you'll outgrow it rather quickly and want to move up to something bigger / more powerful.

I will say though I owned a CBR500R for a brief period which has the same engine and it was a really nice bike. Had just enough poke to keep you entertained round town but for doing anything more than that you'll want something with a bit more oomph. I reckon the Rebel is likely to be tweaked for more grunt down low and less top end revvy though. From my experience on the CBR500R I reckon the A2 category is just perfect for 19 year olds, it's that sweet spot to move up to where you can get a 'proper' bike with 'proper' performance but not so much it's dangerous. JUST enough to keep new riders interested. If you're a bit older though, as I've already said, I wonder if something with a bit more oomph is in order so it can keep you entertained for maybe a year or two rather than getting bored after 6 months and wanting to swap it out for something more powerful and with more character.

I keep nagging my dad to buy a Honda F6C so I can ride it / look at it / listen to it. Couldn't ever bring myself to buy and own one myself as I'm not a cruiser fan but it's an itch I want to scratch along with the CBX (same engine I think). An F6C might be a bit 'too much' bike for a first bike though...

What about a Vulcan S?

https://www.motorcyclenews.com/bike-reviews/kawasaki/vulcan-s/2015/#specs

Looks to me to be beginner friendly still but with a bit more grunt than the Rebel 500.

Still an inline twin though...
