 |
|
Just a quick query as the lad is sorting out insurance for his 125 that'll also be used for trips to and from college (until the snow starts obviously).
Now I always thought commuting was to and from a place of work. College isn't a place of work as such. So does he need just Social, Domestic and Pleasure SDP or the Social, Domestic, Pleasure and Commuting SDPC option?
Thanks in anticipation, MAP ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

I was considering adding my boyfriend to my insurance and the insurer in question told me that going to/from uni (so maybe college could be difference but doubtful) would count as commuting. As said it's regarding how often it'll be used really.
His insurance covers him to ride any bike anyway with third party cover so on the odd occasion he might need it, I decided against it as he added loads to my heavily reduced policy |

If he's classed as a full time student, then yes.
And it's BEST to make sure you get it. It WILL put the premuim up, and as like by 30% or so, but that's becouse the risk increases quite significantly to the insurer.
First regular journey, usually or often in 'peak' traffic significantly increases risk of accident, therfore claim.
Second; sat in a bike shed or other openly accessible area, regularly, it is an easy 'target' for theft, and less secure and likely to be using less security than parked normally at home.
If you don't tick the box, you run at risk of the 'error' bing picked up on in the event of a claim, and like all such insurance errors there days more likely to be queried as a get out, and more likely to come back and give you big bill.
Insurance is a lot more competative these days, and with biking becoming a lot more 'leisure' orientated; they dont presume you will use a bike as regular every day transport.
When I was a student twenty years ago, they didn't even ask what mileage you were likely to do. Av annual miles on a bike then was about half that of a car,m about 6K,, these days its more like 3K. Getting quites for my O/H on a 125, asked her anticipated mileage, when we said about 6K, the insurers were surprised and told us "Well, 3000 is fairly high, these days, are you sure?"
Many people DONT use bikes to get to work or college, they ONLY use them to potter about for practice for tests, or on Sunny weekends after, and THAT is now the 'norm' that an insurance company will 'presume' and argue is a 'reasonable' assumption in court if it ever came to it....
So yes, tick the + Commuting box!
And over estimate anticipated mileage!
And tick box for pillion cover.
IF you want o make a change to a policy after inception, they will often charge you £30 just to process the change, and if they can 'add' anything to the premium while they are at it, they will... So get as much 'bagged' on the policy at the beginning as you can, without hiking premium TOO much! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

To be honest, how would they know you often visited college on your bike? For all they know it could have been an odd day that you went there and had an accident?? ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

Hmm, good question. I'll go out on a limb and say... no idea.
Cost it up. If it's another £5 or so, I'd get it, just to avoid any hassle if you have a smash on the trip there or back. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
