Just got my bike (and a helmet). Now I need some gear. Specifically a good jacket. Can't see anything I like second hand online. Where is good to look for good deals?

Also, it is possible to add back protection to an older jacket that was build without it included? I guess not? Are jackets with back protectors uncomfortable to wear normally? As in walking around town would it annoy me? Cheers!

Sportsbikeshop, I suppose, then plug your selection (or selection from elsewhere) into a search to see whether anywhere's cheaper.

Cheers. Also just came across this site, and I like the jackets. Anyone know if they are good quality?

When they use a phrase like Design unofficially replicated by in their specs it makes me think avoid.

I bought something similar by GP leathers as my first 2 piece and ultimately a waste of £150 ish. The stitching was wonky and started fraying...not on the outside but the inside liner and the Velcro pads on the cuffs came apart. They lasted 18 months.

Post a pic of the jacket you like.

Most if not all back protectors are the foam type, they'll offer almost no protection against an impact. You'd need something like an ABS hard plastic type.

No I don't find either type uncomfortable.

No idea. Look very "fashionable". Much stuff by company called "reltex" which has a web presence.

Other than Sportsbikeshop, which I'd also reccomend, amongst others there's https://www.jsaccessories.co.uk/, which has the advantage of maybe having a physical branch near you if you're lucky.

I go for D3O (often incorrectly named as D30 by retailers if you're googling it), for all my armour, not just back protectors. It's designed to be soft and flexible in normal use, but stiffens up markedly under an impact. Good stuff. The material is used by a lot of manufacturers.

j&s is good, loads of stores and can get online.

I got a really good jacket from ebay, new with tags, has been warm, comfy waterproof although have added my own extra proofing to it.
got my trousers there too, used but like new. infact boots as well lol.

Main thing from j&s was helmet and gloves as they had to fit right before i bought. they were helpful with that.

Yeah, my first thought was it was probably naff. I don't mind that its not genuine if its well stitched and good matterial, but if its poor quality what is the point in it looking good?

BMW dealers have a great range of clothing. If you're patient you can get great gear very cheaply (BMW or other) second hand on ebay. People will be having a new year clearout. Some of them will be giving up bikes and flogging nearly new top of the range gear.

Have a think about an airbag vest/jacket. Might keep you alive or out of a wheelchair.

What shape are you? A lot of gear is sized differently, a good everyday textile jacket may not fit like a leather. If you want to try first, then any local shops will be better. Always, Always ask for a price match to sportsbikeshop, they may be the cheapest around, but everyone has a margin they can drop to.

Then trying is everything. I'm in the same boat, albeit size is different. An Oxford jacket was a good fit on my body, but on my arms was tight. Held jacketvfits me fine, but costs more. Richa leather is perfect if I stay away from pies. Their goretex jacket is roomy, (even with liner in). Rst have always been slim on the gut, alpinestars and others also. As I've said before, fit is everything. Price comes second if the armour doesn't stay where it should. Quality, that's you're own choice!

Why do you want to buy online, are you limited on budget or do you just like to feel like you've saved a few quid?
I find the extra price you pay in stores is generally worthwhile so that you know your getting something that fits,is comfortable and good quality. A lot of places will price match or give you a good deal if your buying a bunch of stuff too.

I've bought online a couple of times and I've nearly always been slightly disappointed that something isnt quite like I expected, like a pair of winter gloves that we're too big or boots that are too bulky.

As I recently discovered, buying at bike shows (I know you pay an entry fee) is often a good way to go if you get the timing right. I recently bought an RST Textile (waterproof) jacket from Motorcycle Live for £49.99. I thought that was a great deal! I'm sure I'll pick up some more bits at the London Motorcycle Show next month.
