Hey all

I've got an R6 5SL 05 that's been having charging problems for a few years. Every now and then I take a look at it and think I've sorted it to have it die on me. I'm not sure how long it's been going on, as I've had a few dead batteries and previously put it down to winter conditions and not riding much but looking back, might all be related to this issue.

I've replaced the battery last year, I also replaced the reg-rec for a used one one Ebay (stupidly chucking the original one away) - after that didn't fix the charging issue I checked the alternator to find it wasn't outputting properly at the plug that connects it to the loom - so I replaced that.

I'm now getting between 20 - 30AC when idling (is it supposed to drop as it warms up?) - and 80AC at 5K Rev across all three wires. I've previously had the earth wire burn up, so removed the Reg/Rec plug and clipped them all directly onto my replacement Reg/Rec. I also extended the wires with oxygen-free speaker cable to make it fit.

The battery has depleted once or twice due to previous problems. The first time I took it out I was able to bump start it and it got me home. The second time it died completely and I had to push it. The battery is holding about 12.4V after I charge it.

When I start the bike the battery voltage is 11.76, revving it gets to 11.78 - but it doesn't go any higher than this. The AC Voltages are carrying to the connectors for the Reg/Rec so I believe the alternator is working as expected now.

I guess my question is replace reg/rec first or battery? I don't want to buy another ebay 2nd hand reg/rec, what's a good pattern replacement?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks

First of all, assuming you mean 20-30 Volts AC at idle and 80 Volts AC at 5000 RPM.

Your stator appears to be working normally. I don't know what oxygen free speaker cable is, but it should be of sufficent size to carry the current from the stator to the reg/rectifier. Recommend 14SWG or 2 mm for that application.

11.76 - 11.78 Volts DC at the battery is no good. You should see around 13.5 VDC at idle and 14.0 - 14.5 VDC at 5000 RPM.

The attached flow chart will help you sort out your problem. For the R/R, I have had good success with the MOSFET R1 kit, available here: https://www.roadstercycle.com/

Snake oil sold by the same people that sell shit like this.

It's supposed to improve the audio experience but all you'd need on a reg rec to stator and battery is just copper wire of the right thickness.
