Bit out of touch in this area but my father-in-law wants to print out some photos of the new baby. From my experience inkjet on glossy paper is the best result but he's loath to buy such a thing and then find it gummed up in 6 months time. Laser is obviously the way to go if a printer is to be gathering dust most of its life but I've never had much luck getting good photos from one.

Any suggestions?

Send them to an online printing service they are usually surprisingly good and not pricey - try a couple first.
e.g., https://dscolourlabs.co.uk/

This. You never actually need that many prints and the ones yiou get done professionally really look the part. You can get them done on special media and mounted so you have something worth framing

I've written out step-by-step instructions on how to download DropBox, upload photos and create share links. Just counting the hours before the call "...I can't get this fucking thing to work!" Rolling Eyes

I'm really curious as to what you normally print up to 13x44 inch.
its a wee bit wider but far longer than A3 yet too narrow while still
far longer then A2.
Is it some vinyl graphics standard or something obscure like that?

Typical small banner size. It's the sort of thing I'd buy if I were doing a trade show.

Mainly panoramic photo prints, my printer has the option to take roll media, paper, canvas etc, but it is not always easy to get it in A3+, A3 is a bit more common but still not easy to get a good deal on it, i could buy a roll of 44" wide and cut it myself but the initial expense outweighs the pro's as it would be dead money.

Oh, right

I have an A3 printer but do photo prints so infrequently nowadays
I usually have to feck about with test prints, settings and such and
waste ink and paper before getting close to the desired results.
Not very efficient eh?
Theres a Prontaprint just down the road and I find it's less arseache and stress
for me to to just give him a usb stick and get him to knock stuff out at up to around A2.

My main field is wedding and portrait photography so was much easier for me to print in house.

I have an Epson R3000, originally had it fitted with a CIS, but just swapped all that out for refillable cartridges which are much neater, I still use K3 pigment inks but much cheaper to buy in bulk than OEM cartridges.

Test prints i just use some basic everyday paper, mainly just for layout purposes so use very little ink.

A follow up...

In the end I bought an Epson ET-2720. It's a typical light-duty printer/scanner/WiFi thing but rather than traditional ink cartridges it has refillable tanks. Obviously you tend to go a bit nuts in the first few days printing stuff out but I don't think the touted "last you a year" is too far off the mark. Even after that though a full set of Epson inks is £20~£25 so very economical Smile

Print quality is surprisingly good as long as you faff about telling the printer what sort of paper is inserted and whatever printer driver you use is aware of various paper grades.

I've got around the typical problem of print head gumming up through lack of use by scheduling a regular test page to spit out. Occasionally this yields a missing line promoting a nozzle clean but the thing's been a trooper so far Very Happy
