Hello all
I recently bought a Honda CG125 BR J, when I was riding it home, I noticed that it had no power at high rpm, it would just spit and sputter, until I lowered the revs or shifted up, And i couldn't get it past 40mph, 45 downhill.

I replaced the carb with a replacement pz27 with accelerator pump like was on there when i bought it. That carb had no markings on it whatsoever so definitely not original, i did open it up to check the jet sizes cos i read that on the later frame numbers like mine had the main jet upped to 95 from 90 if i recall, but no markings on anything inside. I do have a spare PZ26 carb without the pump, if anyone recommends it, i can swap it onto the bike but i don't want to fix an issue that isn't present.

I also replaced the throttle cable because it was worn and had about an inch of slack, and does on the new one with adjusters backed out entirely which baffles me.

Anyhow, with the new carb, it runs a little better, but can only get to about 50mph, 5th gear is almost pointless, but still has issues at higher revs, it feels like I've slipped out of gear, there is 0 power until the revs drop and the gear "re engages"?

I am also going to check my points and condenser soon hopefully to check they are in working condition

2nd issue, the battery isn't charging, the indicators only work around a certain rev range so i can't sit at a junction at idle, maybe the generator or stator, can't remember the name, is shot? maybe causing the running issue where the right spark energy isn't being produced?

It's an 89 br j, Any help will be greatly appreciated by all you Bike enthusiasts

I would take the spark plug out and check for signs of lean or rich running so you have some direction. When it starts running badly put the choke on and see if it runs better or worse. You could also take the air filter out see if it runs better or worse.

If it's revving up but the power isn't getting to the back wheel, then your clutch is slipping. This could be down to worn out clutch plates, but a poorly adjusted cable is more likely. Make sure you have some free play in the clutch lever.

In general it sounds like fairly standard abused CG125. Give it a full service, then start looking for problems.

Also not sure if they had gone to electronic ignition by then, or if an 89 model had points and condenser. I found it very difficult to find accurate information on what was fitted to each one, seeing as they had a model run of about 40 years in at least two countries.

The charging systems on them are fairly robust for a Honda of that time, but it probably needs a new battery if the rest of it is fucked. Service it like it hasn't been looked at for a decade.
