Hi all,
One of my winter projects is restoring a 90's yamaha 2t (yes another one)
Cylinder is nicasil plated.
When I disassembled the engine, the piston was stuck to cylinder after sitting for a while.
I carefully got it unstuck & i will be replacing the piston etc.
Looking at the nicasil, it looks undamaged & I can't feel any nicks or scores with my finger nail, but it's "stained" where the the piston was stuck.
How do I tell, for sure, if it's ok to re-use?
Nowhere local touches 2 strokes so I'm guessing I'd have to send it to Langcourts for a replate or use as it is.
Any opinions?
I can post pics if it helps but not sure if anyone could tell just by looking at a pic....

cheers,
GAZ

Nikasil is harder than a Moss-side bouncer. You ain't going to damage it with any abrasive less than diamond or CBN, so get some 600 grit paper and scrub the stain off it. You could even run a 3-legged spring hone through it quite safely.

Hi,
Thanks for the response.
I knew nicasil was hard but didn't think it was wise to hone it as it's supposed to be really thin Thinking
I knew nicasil was hard but didn't think it was wise to hone it as it's supposed to be really thin & presuming it gets thinner with high mileage.
I'll give it a polish with very fine wet & dry, something like 1200 & see if that takes the marks off

cheers,
GAZ

Wouldn't the hone put a better surface on the cylinder to help seat the new piston rings? Don't know much about breaking in two strokes, but polishing the cylinder sounds counterintuitive to me.

You do not hone nicasil bores, if the bore is intact leave it alone, re ring the piston if you need to.

The intent is not to hone the bore, but to remove any material stuck to the nikasil that might cause a high-friction spot to pick up on the piston material.

We're not talking about spinning the hone up on a motor, just a light clean-up turning by hand. It'll be obvious if there's a rubbing spot.

Between Wankie and Jazzy jeff there's a lot of bollocks floating around in this thread.

As Pete says you'd need to physically grind or machine the current coating off, a bit of exuberant use of wet and dry or a three legged hone won't touch it.

Make sure it's not flaked or chipped anywhere as if it is it tends to be the start of a slippery slope of rapid bore wear.
