I've just gone into Tier 4 this week, and realistically I see no likelihood of us coming out of that for many weeks. As you can only make a SORN for whole months, and today's the 31st, I've just gone ahead and SORNed my bike at least for January The world's smallest violin player, just for you!

For me, seems pointless not to really: I may as well get at least £7.75 back for next month. Third time this year Sad

Lightweight Wink I went out on the bike today. Okay, so I didn't really want to go above 50 due to the wind chill but it was still more convenient than taking the car to do some end of year errands.

Funnily enough one of them was to pay in a refund cheque from the DVLA for the Rebel's tax.

The tax is cheap enough to leave the bikes on the road all year round. There's still decent riding to be had on dry, crisp, clear days.

For sure: Even as a recreational-only rider I'm normally out and about 12 months of the year, weather permitting; but my point was that Tier 4 restricts you to staying at home 24/7 unless you have a "reasonable excuse", I'm not going to be riding any time soon. I work at home, and even if a bike ride to Tescos is defensible I really can't see me getting all my winter riding gear on just for the sake of doing that.

Tier 4 advice and Tier 4 legislation aren't necessarily the same thing - just as in the Highway Code SHOULD means you probably should do something but MUST means you MUST.

I'm not usually much of a fan of White Dalton but this one explains a lot without me having to retype it and point you at the legislation specifics:

No, not SORNing. I just taxed my 1977 project bike as a historic vehicle. I want to hop on it and give it a good go, the moment I get my precious and hard to obtain carb holder through the post, or else make my own carb holder. Plus, I'll be back to leisure riding (2 or 3 hour round trips) once we're safely past the drunks-on-the-road season, unless there's snow and ice. 2 layers of clothing, a neckwarmer, thermal socks and thermal inner gloves liners, and I'm good to go.

My understanding of Tier 4 is that the rules state you can't leave your home if you live in "the" Tier 4 area, without lawful excuse (e.g. visiting an area outdoors for outdoor recreation). They don't say you can't go from one town in Tier 4 to another town in Tier 4, for example.

There are plenty of fine, dry winter days when you can get out.

I don't like laying vehicles up for any length of time, seals dry out and condensation can be a problem. Fuel can also turn to white spirit if you're off the road long enough. Internal combustion engines need regular exercise.

Yep, did it last weekend but only cos it's in bits. soon as I get the list of 'things I want done' done, I'll get it taxed, and MOT'd....

    * New seals and dust covers. DONE
    * Respray & laquer outer fork housing. DONE
    * Respray & laquer top & bottom yokes. DONE
    * Replace headlight glass.
    * Add relay to headlight system for std bulbs.
    * Add cruising lights.
    * Rechrome handlebars.
    * Change rear sprocket back to original.

Sometime in Feb I'm thinking.

well, there are many reasonable excuses to be had:

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/1374/schedule/3A

Exception 1: leaving home necessary for certain purposes

(2) Exception 1 is that it is reasonably necessary for the person concerned (“P”) to leave or be outside the place where P is living (“P’s home”)—

(a) to buy goods or obtain services from any business or service listed in paragraph 17

(b) to obtain money from or deposit money with any business listed in paragraph 17(k) or (l) of this Schedule;

(c) to take exercise outside

(d) to visit a public outdoor place for the purposes of open air recreation

(e) to attend a place of worship;

... I have omitted some of the stuff there but it seems perfectly clear that we are allowed outside for the purpose of recreation. this is the law. not the "guidance".

I used to SORN my bike in the winter when we had 2 cars, but as we only have the Land Rover now and the OH uses that for work, my bike is now my daily transport.

I’m not in tier 4, as in Halifax Yorkshire.

I don’t follow the news anymore, I genuinely don’t listen or watch.

Do the new restrictions stop motorcycling? Are you able to bike say to the pharmacy or to work?

I live in Wales, and all of it is Tier 4. You can use your bike for work if you can't work from home, nowhere does it (nor will it) specify permissible modes of transport.

I'll be getting the bike out for work, and scraping the ice off it in about an hour.

The legislation is linked above and it's not a very long read.

Having four bikes (well I guess only three when 1 is tax/mot exempt), I constantly juggle between SORNing and taxing the ones I want to use..

For example in the last month I've decided to ride the rat, which I wasn't previously using- but now I feel I need to what with salt, and possible crashing now the weather has turned again.
