Hi.
I'm new to this forum but I was hoping someone might be able to confirm whether a 2014 Versys 1000 has linked brakes or not. I hope 'not'.
Looking at reviews for some of my favorite bikes, I was surprised to find that the reviewer didn't mention this particular piece of, IMHO, very important information. I know there are pro's and con's to linked brakes,
but I really don't like them.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

Can’t you unlink the brakes if they are linked?
Maybe the brakes from another model in the Suzuki range can be made to fit?.

Might be nice if you told us about yourself if you are going to be here?
What bikes do you have/had?
Been riding long?

My 2015 model didn't have linked brakes.

Good point. Sorry. I currently have a CB1300, an Aprilia CapoNord 1000 and an Aprilia Futura. I moved to Lincolnshire (from Kent) recently and was a little shocked to find how 'rural' it was, with quite a lot of mud and stuff on the roads. I've decided that perhaps the CapoNord is the 'best' bike for here, but it's not quite the best bike available, as much as I love it. I'm thinking of replacing all my bikes with something that's maybe a cross between the CB1300, for 'poke', and the CapoNord, for coping with 'not clean' roads.
I have considered the Moto Morini Granpasso or the Moto Guzzi Stelvio, but then was surprised to find that a 1000cc Versys has more of what I'm looking for, without going up to a 1200 and the possible weight penalty (e.g. VFRX - 275 kgs). I know the BMW GS is considered the 'best' bike, but I'm afraid it's not my cup of tea.
Thank you for the replies. It's appreciated.

Nothing here

https://www.motorcyclenews.com/bike-reviews/kawasaki/versys-1000/2012/

to hint at linked brakes, however here

https://www.topspeed.com/motorcycles/motorcycle-reviews/kawasaki/2014-kawasaki-versys-1000-grand-tourer-ar164276.html

says “For example, KIBS (Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System) is a high-precision brake system designed specifically for supersport models, enabling sport riding to be enjoyed by a wider range of riders. And by linking the front and rear brakes, K-ACT (Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-braking Technology) ABS provides the confidence to enjoy touring on heavyweight models. Kawasaki is continually working on the development of other advanced ABS systems.”

So that’s a ‘probably’, sorry.

Off topic, we are in the process of this... how did you find it initially?

They are definitely not linked. I changed the brake fluid on mine a few times and they are two different systems. There is no physical way that the bike could activate a brake caliper without you pressing the lever that controls that brake. There may be some sort of electronic balancing on the ABS but you would have to be skidding to have that kick in.

I had linked brakes on my Varadero and they are a shit idea. On that bike pressing the rear brake could activate the front. Not very reassuring when you are lent over doing a feet up u-turn and using the rear brake only. That worked by having a hinged part on one of the front brake calipers, if that seized it could put your back brake on and make it drag. This system required pipes all over the place linking all the brake parts

My current bike has linked brakes but they work the other way round. If you pull the front lever only, it applies some back brake, but not the other way round. You can feel this if you use both brakes together properly which I can't help due it being drilled into me many years ago. The rear brake pedal will sort of kick back gently as you ease up on the front when slowing down.

I think only Honda and Moto Guzzi go in for that nonsense. It might have ABS, but there will be versions with and without if so, because it's before compulsory ABS IIRC.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Hi. We're really happy here. It's a small town with the countryside 2 streets away and the neighbours are great. There's a good selection of shops both locally and a few miles up the road. There's even a cafe around the corner that's popular with bikers!! Great roads, lots of speed cameras and watch out for the 'stuff' on the roads, if you're on 'B' and back roads (or 'A' roads, come to that!). Good luck with your move and I hope you'll be as happy as we are here.

Thank you for that. I had a Varadero myself, along with several other bikes that had linked brakes, but the only one I can remember specifically was the 1800 Goldwing. Trail braking was very difficult.
I've discovered that 'linked brakes' covers a multitude of sins as both Honda and BMW apparently have systems that allow trail braking before activating the front brake as well, depending on the level of pressure applied to the foot pedal. I could probably live with that but unless reviewers include that detail in their write ups, how's a guy to know? Thank goodness for forums and the decent people on them!
Thank you to all who have read and responded.

I'm guessing that Tinman found it by coming through the Dartford Tunnel, then M25/M11/A14/A1M/A15? Whether that's how you'd initially find it depends on whereabouts you're setting off from, for me M1/A57 would be better; maybe try Google maps? Wink
