PostPosted: 18:47 - 20 Jan 2021    Post subject: Givi top box plate adaptation? Reply with quote

I want to get a topbox for my Crossrunner, the OEM ones are mega bucks for what seem to actually be quite cheap and cheerful boxes, plus need key internals etc. etc.. Mine already has the Honda topbox rack mounted, but frustratingly Givi don't make an adaptor to fit it. Am I missing the obvious here, but any reason why this plate (M8B) couldn't just be drilled and bolted to the existing bolt holes in the rack (there are a second pair of holes under the ruler)? I can't find any dimensions anywhere but looking at images it looks bigger than the rack base (which measures roughly 200mm wide at the midpoint). I could use penny washers to help distribute the load . . . thoughts? Obviously would need to ensure the finished bolt head top is lower than the rubber mounts the box sits on, but it looks like roughly 10mm so should be doable with a low profile head.

Alternative is a whole new rack which I'd prefer not to. Or am I missing another alternative?

Note the ruler is a scale ruler; right edge scale is 1:1.

cheers

Have you bought the box already? Not sure about the monokey base you picture but a monolock base will mount to anything.

Not yet no but I prefer the look of the monokey stuff - seems sturdier.

Or is this the thing I need? Bit dubious being made out of plastic but then again I guess the top box mounts are too.

Providing I've read it right and you do have a VFR800X.

I'd take it one step at a time and get a top box only once you've fiddled around and seen how secure it it / managed to mount it.

Yeah, that's the same attachment set up as the monolock I recent put on my XSR (in Show & Tell.) The Givi stuff is solid, IMHO, plastic or not.

Working on the assumption the monokey universal plate has similar dimensions to the one you've got, roughly what dimensions does the "honeycombed" area cover please?

2p worth.

You can drill the Givi Mount to suit the Existing rack bolt holes.

Butt....

Will the box still fit on top of the Givi Plate with your modifikated mounting holes?

Where the Givi mounting holes are is probably thicker Prastic (Possibly GRP) perhaps your new holes will not be through a thick part of the plate.
That could compromise the plate and box security.
Specially if your lugging 50kg of gold bars in the box. 🤣

OK, so I got hold of a monokey universal plate; it's quite substantial, even though it is made out of plastic. I was hoping to be able to utilise the rack's existing bolt holes to mount the plate, but unfortunately the only location they lined up put the plate too far forwards to get the seat out. Ended up using the brackets the plate came with, 3 brackets fitted nicely, but added the fourth as a bit of extra bracing. Also put on two heavy duty cable ties, secured using some large nuts to wedge into the holes in the plate, as backup fixings should the others ever work loose or fail for any other reason).

Since these photos I've fitted the cover plate and the finished look is quite smart actually. Just need to get me a box now . . .

See, told you it was easy Smile Apologies for not getting back to about the sizes though Shifty

BTW you should have been supplied with nylock nuts, they won't be going anywhere Wink

No worries, think you said you got the monolock version anyway so there was to guarantee the monokey version would be the same. But yet it was easy!

Yep nylocs were supplied so yes they shouldn’t go anywhere but I wasn’t completely happy with the bracket arrangement so it’s an easy adaption to help me sleep better as I go down the M6. 😉
