The main thing to look out for on a charger is the Amp rating. If it charges at too high Amperage it will cause the battery to overheat, which can cause the electrolyte to boil and damage the battery. I think the general rule of thumb is use a charger that puts out a max current of about 10% Ah rating. On a motorbike battery that is around 1Amp. Car chargers can go way higher than that so they are not suitable for motorbike batteries.

As oily rag says a 1 amp charger is all you need for a bike battery

Of course you can trickle charge it! Take the battery out of the bike and trickle charge it overnight. Replace in bike the next day Wink

I just recently bought a "bike" charger and you get a choice of traditional croc-clips or the permanent "garage queen" fly-lead to use as you see fit.

What's causing the problem in the first place.... that's what to watch out for.

I've been using an Oxford Oximiser 900 for a few years and it does the job, it's "smart," cheapish and has just enough information displayed.

I run it off a Halfords (Ring) Powerpack 200. Admittedly it's an expensive combo but I paired the new charger with the Powerpack I already had, and I like the convenience. (I do miss having a garage with mains electric though.) The bike battery can stay on the bike, which is in an off-site garage, and afterwards I take the Powerpack back to the house to top up its battery.

Rule of thumb is charge it at 10% if the battery’s capacity: ie charge a 10Ah battery at 1A.

I have a NOKO charger that came with a lithium battery, can't fault it.

I like smart chargers. I use Optimates to keep my bike batteries topped up over winter (I use 2 among 7 bikes each for a week at a time before moving to the next). I've never had an issue with them. They come with an adaptor that can be fitted to the battery connections on the bike which makes charging a breeze. Just plug it in and away you go. Smile
