I know there are a few mechanics here so...

Wifies Megane cabriolet bonnet catch is not releasing the bonnet. It feels like it's not doing anything so I'm guessing the cable is broken.

The question is how do I get the bonnet open without breaking anything? Any ideas?

Okay, so the lever does nothing, cable snapped sounds good but where? It's most likely going to be at the bonnet catch end, mid cable (some unseen chaffing point) or actually at the lever...

First thing to check would be inside the car. Maybe the cable comes up to the lever and the end's gone (like a clutch cable fail on a bike, same principle) so if you can find the cable flapping about you might be able to yank it with a pair of pliers.

After that it's pot luck: can you see the bonnet catch through the grill or from the underside of the car and jimmy it with a screwdriver.

Oh, a quick Google search found this:

I wasn't far out Smile

Also worth a try, have one person pull the lever inside the cabin, while someone else presses on the bonnet, to try and relieve the pressure on the catch........... obvisoly if the cable is indeed snapped, this won't work, but it may simply be a sticking catch

Seems to be a common problem - hardly surprising on French motors I suppose Laughing

My old Alfa Giulietta got stuck quite often. You could sometimes free it with two people - one bouncing the bonnet to release the pressure/tension and another pulling the release lever in the car.

Pull the release lever too hard and the plastic snaps.. Rolling Eyes

I had this on my beemer, and it was just that the bonnet latch needed greasing. The cable had not snapped, but was stretching where I was pulling on it. I think I just waited until warmer weather and then opened it, greased the latches and it was fine after that.

I've seen the 'go in from underneath' ideas on google but not being a spry youngster anymore I was hoping for some quick and easy access. Laughing

Oh well, trolley jack and rolling about on the floor it is then. Crying or Very sad

I had to do this with my E65 7 series, you might be able to get it simply reaching around with your hand and a long screwdriver it worked for me on that tank so might not need the jack out.

BCF: "Oh, for goodness' sake" You need to post the engine size, year and colour!!"

Anyway, you could grope about in the footwell and see what has happened to the catch/cable, or try pushing a flat plastic thing (like her fish slice... Smile ) into the crack under the bonnet, to lever the lever up (small bright torch useful for both things), or there are various things people propose in results from a Google search:

renalut megane bonnet OR hood catch broken

I suggest putting it up on a lift and removing the gearbox and engine. With those out the way you have easy access to the latch.

Is this not a chicken and egg paradox in that you need the bonnet open to raise the engine off it's mounts to drop it out?

Depends on the car, some you go in via the bonnet, unbolt and lift out (possibly with the gearbox still attached) and some might be on a cross strut you unbolt from beneath the car and drop the whole thing out instead.

Neither of which really helps with the original problem Rolling Eyes Dunno if this helps:

Doesn't look fun!
