Fill pockets with pork pies and sandwiches train to the smoke and off you go.

I go with a pal or two - bit lonely otherwise.

I'm always up for a piss up if anybody is in town, moreso now than ever before (single bird, on the piss in London with non-romantic blokey mates*, yay! Can't think of anything better Laughing )

I am happy to be an entertaining companion in Londonish exploits.
I'm pretty rubbish at knowing about good drinking places as I have been out of the London scene for quite a while. The bloke I was hoping to get out and about with in Soho just before this whole coronathing kicked off, topped himself shortly after lockdown, and so I have nobody to play with.

*yes, and girlie mates too - I was lining MCW up for a going-out girlie mate but she appears to have damaged herself in the countryside and rarely makes it up here at present. Dangerous place, the countryside! Best off staying in town Laughing

You're unlikely to manage that, as even my daughter cannot keep up.

*although yes, the military type was one recipient of the two cigars I bought, he hasn't reported back as to whether he enjoyed it or not. He has yet to bring me the port he promised me he would teach me about.

I sometimes wonder if this is "Anders" from centuries old BCF history.

They have a time and a place - usually October in Bavaria.

Craft ales have become really good these days. When microbreweries play around with things like coffee in their beer, or giving their products stupid names, then that's going too far for my liking. But I think this is a golden age of real ale. The more hopped, pineol-ish and resinous, the better. The hipsters did at least this much good.

I suspect none. One would be in a layby on top of a pile of shite and the other would be used for onanistic purposes.

Nooooo I remember going to an amazing German sausage restaurant somewhere in Kingston.

I'm not a fan of beer, but will happily eat my way through several platters of schnitzel and sausage, I'm sure they can find me a nice riesling.

if you are in Scotland, and you aren't keen on Whisky, or are doing a more northerly tour, then The Edinburgh Gin Company tour was recommended to me by a good friend.

https://www.edinburghgin.com/distilleries-and-tours

Obvs not on at the moment, but he describes making his own bottle, with flavours of his choosing, there will be other Gin distilleries offering similar no doubt.

I see Brewdog offer tours as well https://www.brewdog.com/usa/locations/brewery/ellon

hat way you could do Gin in Edinburgh, The speyside tour, and finish in Ellon for a BrewDog tour.

Have a read of
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Iain-Banks-Raw-Spirit-Perfect/dp/B00NBD8ER4/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1YQHVQ8X4SNAR&dchild=1&keywords=iain+banks+raw+spirit&qid=1610701542&sprefix=iain+banks%2Caps%2C150&sr=8-2
Raw Spirit by Iain Banks (my #1 favourite author, SF and/or regular fiction; sadly deceased waaaaay too early), you may get an idea of where you'd like to go in Scotland - they are certainly not all the same!

I can't really agree with this. One or two stronger straw-coloured citrus-hopped ales maybe but that's often all you can get and it do cost the earth, and is often too astringent to drink more than a couple.
For a Leo* you need a decent session ale (sub 4% decent malt/hop mix) - old school cooking bitter.

All horses for courses - subjectivity is what gives the variety. One of my favourite beers is still Bathams Bitter. Only obtainable generally in a handful of pubs in the Black Country. Coincidence or not, but the pubs that sell it (less than half a dozen I think) are all properly old school and fantastic in their own right too.

This was in the Great Western in Wolverhampton back in Feb last year, I think the last proper pub crawl I did. Pure nectar. Could (and have) drink this stuff all day.

Edit: on the way back from the bike show at the NEC in Nov 19 I jumped off the train and popped in the same pub for a few Bathams, ended up talking to this old bloke who it turns out used to make motorcycle components "back in the day" in a factory nearby. I miss the impromptu conversations of a good pub . . .

Sick
WTF do I have to drink lemon-flavoured beer these days? Why is it so hard to find common-or-garden good old-fashioned bitter these days? Bizarre.

Fair enough. Citrus-hopped ales (especially the American turbocharged varieties) are quite a departure from traditional English milds, I agree. I've just got to have that hops "burn". I'm sort of the way with ale as I am with bikes - enjoying them without knowing too much about them. The nice thing is, even the most niche and specialist microbreweries seem to have a good basic bitter/mild. Good for benchmarking.

In my experience, milds and bitters are actually the hardest to brew well; there's absolutely no room for error due to their more subtle flavours. Hop-bombs and imperial stouts have such an onslaught of flavour mistakes can be, to a degree, masked. There are probably 100+ rubbish milds/bitters for each good one.

Very good points. A good mild has those bready notes, and all the flavour spectrum is filled up: bass, mids and trebles are all there. In the best case, it has slight floral hints as well. One that comes to mind is the (wrongly named) Rebellion "IPA". I do fancy I can tell hops varieties apart, in a lot of cases. Originally, I think microbreweries experimented with American Cascade, and they used it sparingly. Then, when Citra and Amarillo and the rest came on the scene, things changed. Good for me but not so good for people who don't think hops are always good. And I agree there are breweries that are dry/late hopping in order to disguise unpleasant flavours. St Austell (mentioned earlier in this thread) is a big multi-barrel operation now, and is most famous for Sharp's Doom, I think. But it's also trying to "hop" on the hops bandwagon, with a product called "Proper IPA", which is just completely off, in my opinion.

Anyway, don't want to derail the whiskey thread any further.
