Hello everyone...couldn't see anywhere to introduce myself so I'm doing it here seeing as I'll be on this thread more than any others. My name is Dave from London but moved to West Yorkshire about 13 years ago. Ride a 1995 ST1100 Pan Rat.

I have a question. How long have you had that?

Oh, welcome home, by the way.

Hello Dave from London, now in Yorkshire.
I am Jennifer from Auckland, now in London.

I used to hang out on ratbike.org when the internet first arrived at planet hellkat. I have had a secret geekish crush on ratbikes ever since.

I currently have a dreadfully-maintained Sportster and people (men) like to tut a lot and tell me off whilst they show me how to fix it.

Was it in any way designed to look like that, or did it evolve through necessity or neglect?

Eclectic describes us well.
Trolls, snowflakes, lurkers , gits , we’ve got them all Laughing Thumbs Up .

I’m not a great fan of rat bikes, however that looks functional and didn’t see any stupid metal skulls welded onto it Thumbs Up

Welcome.

Welcome OP.

Do you like Harley Davidsons, Sport Arse-less Chaps/Fringed Buckskin Attire or can you do One-Handed Wheelies?

I can't see any resemblance to a police motorbike, and I prefer the neglected/evolved sort to the deliberate, but ho hum, each to his own.

I think our new friend is saying that it once looked like a police bike and now it doesn't - hopefully through neglect and necessity 'survivor' style...

Now where's that "raised eyebrow" emoticon gone again.

What had they stopped you for when you took that photo, by the way?

I like the look and sound of a Harley but I like my bikes to go through a UK winter without spending it in the garage every 2 days.....definitely don't wear chaps of any kind especially Arse-less ones ffs lol and I firmly believe that any wheely attempted on this would probably end up with bits of it all over the road.

That pretty much defines all rat bikes yes, but everyone is personal to the builder. When I got the bike it had already been ripped apart. I made it mine by using what I had laying about and the cheapest parts I could find... the result is a bike that's very personal to me and don't be fooled by the bodged look, that's kinda on purpose. It went through its MOT 3 weeks ago with no advisories, starts every time you push the button and so far hasnt let me down once.

Isn't there a guy called Virus or Vyrus who had a GSX600/1200 ratter, and was it he with the keg trailer? There are a few others with actual rat or survival bikes that were either carefully crafted or evolved over time. Even Sammy (smiler) was into survival bikes at one stage? What happened to him?

I still firmly believe you can't buy a rat bike - that's not how it works. It's akin to buying a CX500 Cafe racer from a hipster for ten thousand of your Earth pounds. But y'know... each to their own and all that I guess?

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
