Insurance based stuff just means the queues go down because people stay at home and die

Yep. Famous case showing how quickly Americans in particular can fall prey to this:
Quote:
Susan Finley returned to her job at a Walmart retail store in Grand Junction, Colorado, after having to call in sick because she was recovering from pneumonia.

The day she returned, the 53-year-old received her ten year associate award – and was simultaneously laid off, according to her family. She had taken off one day beyond what is permitted by Walmart’s attendance policy.

After losing her job in May 2016, Finley also lost her health insurance coverage and struggled to find a new job. Three months later, Finley was found dead in her apartment after avoiding going to see a doctor for flu-like symptoms.

US employment laws didn’t help.

The Tories introduced the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) but it was New Labour who really got going with it. Now NHS has PFI hospital bills of “£80billion for just £13billion of actual investment.”

A right wing neo-lib Labour party though.

Bothe Tories and Labour need to take a long hard look at the neo-lib rabbit gole they ran down and start looking at how they can put right the disaster of the last forty three years.

The West is on a retreat at the moment as we peaked in the 90's and then carried things on via the never never

Scotland will probably need the UK money to fix their NHS if they want it sorting realistically, they might have managed it themselves if they championed North sea oil, but they're winding that down and hoping for handouts from the EU/ UN

But everybody has been talking about all these overpaid managers for years and nothing has been done. Can anybody actually pick some of these individuals out and say exactly how they're wasting money,

If you’re a manager of a failing department you need to come up with innovative solutions and new ways of working. That’s your job. We’ve seen little of that in the NHS, and instead lots of waste. Until recently you couldn’t easily return crutches, and recent moves to right such an obvious wrong seem to have been inspired only by the need to reduce the NHS’ carbon footprint rather than old-fashioned budget management.

"it is also worth considering just how much of day-to-day public spending is now diverted to the NHS.

At the turn of the century, the health service took just over a quarter. Now it is fast approaching a half.

There is clearly a limit to how much the budget can keep going up - resources are not infinite. It is a point made in a new book by former British Medical Association president Prof Sir David Haslam, chairman of the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence, the body which decides what treatments should be made available on the NHS.

In the book, Side Effects, in which he recounts his experience of being treated for cancer as well as his thoughts on the health service, he makes the case for continuing with a universal system that means no matter how rich or poor you are, you are entitled to the same treatment.

But he also says the time has come to rethink the NHS's purpose.

He points out that if the budget had been rising as quickly as it did in the 2000s, it would have been consuming close to 100% of gross domestic product by the mid-2070s."

https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/30C5/production/_126558421_optimised-health_spending-nc.png.webp

"The book goes on to lament the medicalisation of everyday life and our increasing anxiety about our health despite, in general, being healthier than ever.

And Sir David rebukes his fellow doctors for overtreating patients because of a risk-averse culture, which means it is easier to do something for patients than not, even if that means using ineffective medicines.

And, in particular, he is critical of the trend in medical science to pour more and more money into aggressively treating seriously ill patients who are close to death with ever more expensive treatments.

It is time, he says, to work out what the boundaries of the health system should be."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-62757787

tl;dr NHS needs to stop using expensive treatments on seriously ill people.

I was working for the last few years mostly with learning disability clients. The amount of drugs they're on is just incredible. There's never any review so they just aquire one medication on top of another. Nearly all of them would have various creams and moisturisers as well, gallons of the damn stuff all because the care workers march the client off to the gp at even the slightest excuse out of a fear of being in trouble if they dont respond to every little complaint. Bit of dry skin, oh yes £10 bottle of Aveeno every month in perpetuity. Get a headache, better get a script for some paracetamol/ibuprofen/codydramol at god knows how much more than it would cost to get a packet from the corner shop. Constipated (because of the s#1t diet the "carers" dole up), dont worry get a script for a gallon of lactulose. And so on.

Book deal and lecture tour in ...... 3.......2..........

She's quitting while she's ahead. The interesting question is which cartoon will succeed her? Her Auntie Broon act has been very effective but the SNP ate going to have to lock some cartoonists in a room and ply them with a lot of whiskey and haggis to come up with a good replacement.

Excellent idea. A glamour contest for 'Miss Scotland' and the winner gets to be 1st minister. Thumbs Up

SNP will probably turn in to waring factions trying to get power

Even then i reckon they'd still win all the elections they're in

Surely the main metric is which would make you drop your ginger if she gave you a swatch of her fanny?

Oh I do hope so. Most Nats I've known are pretty racist when you scratch the pc paint off them. If they get Yousaf as their leader then things will soon fall to bits.
