Hi All,

Appreciate some advice as it's my first bike and winter. My bike is stored outside as I ride all year long.

I have some jobs that needs to be completed on my bike, it needs the brake discs cleaned, chain cleaned/lubed and a wash.

I have all the relevant items to do the job but wondered what is the correct order?

Is it chain/brakes then wash? Or wash first then the other bits?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Why do the brake discs need cleaning?

Wash
Dry
Clean Chain
Lube Chain
Clean wheels.
Brake disc?
If they are rusty wet and dry 600
If they are just dirty they the washing of the bike sorts them.
Don't use a cleaner other than brake cleaner.

They won't be rusty after about 4 miles.

Went out for a couple of hours today and still bits of rust in the vented disc holes.

The ZR7 I had EBC discs on the front and they always had surface rust / spots on them after a winter ride followed by a cover being placed over a warm bike (the luxury of waiting for the bike to cool down or drying it before being covered not available, of course).

While its annoying and looks visually worrying I wouldn't overly worry about it, I never did. Brake cleaner and a quick wipe with a cloth before a ride was my solution to prevent it from getting on the pad face was my solution -- but I cleaned them so often (because I rode in crap weather, and they were really easy to take apart) that I doubt it would have made a difference even if I'd have just rode.

~

You've missed the boat in being able to ACF-50 the bike properly (because IMO its best applied on a warm tail towards the tail end of summer when the bike can dry naturally, or at all), but I'd get one of them £25.69 32oz ACF-50 spray bottles and coat what you can with it, being sure not to trap any salt underneath it so you don't do more damage than good.

If you've not got a hose pipe then a small cheap spray bottle filled with water can be really effective at displacing grime etc after a ride from the hard to reach areas (buy some cheap cleaner from shop, empty, rinse bottle multiple times and use as water sprayer).

~

A scotoiler may be a good investment depending on mileage you do. Always used to annoy me working most of the week and having to use a bike that needed something doing (chain lubing, or brakes cleaning) and not having either the time or long enough dry weather to get it done.

Drill the rust out using a bit that fits the holes.

Brake pad dust may have iron in it and the material scraped off the disc when brakes are used.
It can cause brake squeal on some bikes unless removed.

Discs made of cast steel rust in service.
