Listening to the Groundhog Day 2021 coverage... "what a load of old bollox! where's this happening?" I ask the wife. "Gobbler's Knob, Pennsylvania."

If one can purport to communicate with a fat rodent by the use of a magic staff, in a place with such a name and keep a straight face? Fuck it, keep up the tradition Laughing

And then I thought of the Norwegians and the conspiracy by their government to keep the trolls confined to the mountains by corralling them with power lines...

Of course there's the last aggressive, carnivorous marsupial: The Australian Drop Bear Shocked

What are some other traditions that are absolute wank but just too funny to dispense with in the modern world?

Groundhog Day is the US version of a traditional important date to watch through Europe and much of the Northern Hemisphere as it's about halfway through winter at least so far as feeding livestock is concerned. It's still true today as grass doesn't really get growing enough to sustain them until April.

The key element is the same wherever it is observed that fine spring like weather now is unwelcome and misleading because it almost increases the chances of a further cold and stormy period.
But if you are having poor weather at start of February the chances are that when it does change to something more favourable spring really isn't so far off.

At our latitude there are some grounds for this - about mid February the sun reaches 25 degrees above horizon at noon and instead of being largely reflected away, due to a refraction effect in the atmosphere there's a step change and a greater % strikes the ground.

Degrees Centigrade or Fahrenheit? 🤔
