Hey, when the sun is back on I plan to bike to some National Trust sites where I'll have a long trek round, hopefully in a t-shirt, not under a 5kg jacket, and maybe a picnic with the gal.

My bike has two helmet locks, so that's them sorted. Jacket though.... I've read some run a bicycle cable lock thru the jacket arm and fix to bike, preferably on top so dog's don't munch or piss on it. Anyone do that? Or maybe just buy a loop of cable + padlock.

Also seen these small retractable wire locks, but they look weak.

Obviously this is not for leaving it parked all day in dodgy cities, only for these sunny outings to parks castles n stuff where you'd have to cart your shit around.

I don't have a topbox, but even if I did don't think I could fit the jacket in there.

Yes, I sometimes do that. If I think it isn't going to piss down (in which case I'd likely keep the jacket on anyway). Make a judgement call on the kind of place you're doing it. Even if someone doesn't try to nick it, someone might decide to vandalise it. National Trust property? Most I would consider safe for this. I've done it in certain quieter spots in the Lake District while I go tramping over the fells for the day, but there are places in that region I wouldn't.

Another option is a Pacsafe metal mesh 'bag', for bags, jackets etc. Look em up.

Oh, yes, ouch!
I got mine ages ago for much less than that I think. Initially used it to lock my hiking rucksack up in some places, but switched use over to bike gear too.

I have a 6' length of plastic covered steel cable (the type they use for emergency stop wires on machines) with a loop crimped on each end. I use it to fasten my jacket and/or helmet (depending on the location). It can be used with the helmet lock under the seat or with a brake disc lock. Coils up and takes up minimal space under the seat when not in use.

Probably not the most secure thing in the world, but it needs someone equipped with more than just a pair of pliers to remove it.

Oh that thing looks really cool! Not sure how practical to carry and stick your stuff in tho. Think I'll go with the cable ones.

If you're talking about the Pacsafe, it packs down into a pouch about 6" x 4" and about 2" thick, including holding a small padlock.

That's alright actually.

That's what I had in mind as the good compromise. Bit hard to visualise for me, how big is it +-? Like fit table under the bike seat/compared to a disc lock.

It's not that big at all. I have ample space under my Fazer Thousand seat so I just roll it up and chuck it under there until it's needed
