Just seeking some advice,
Im looking at cruisers, to use for travelling to work, which consists of a 150 mile trip, twice a week. Other then that general day to day.

Been considering harley davidson sportsters or yamaha xvs950 bolt

Anyone have any other opinions or options they might advise or suggest?

Many thanks Thumbs Up

None of them. Jap ones behave tolerably but they don't give particularly good visibility and many other bike handle much better.

Oy ride one if you are into arseless leather chaps.

Triumph made one called the America, but l'm not sure if it is sold in the UK, but all the Jap cruisers are more than efficient & also look the part.
Try them for size because if you have long legs (over 32" inseam) something like the missus's Honda Shadow 750 is cramped, although such a relatively short distance wouldn't have rigor mortice setting in even on a monkey bike!

Short arse me, so should be alright for leg reach .. have had a little look at them americas, may have look a bit more. Cheers Thumbs Up

Fireblade/////thread.

150 miles twice a week I'd want something comfy, upright, capable. VStrom 1000 sort of thing?

I quite like the look of the Indian Scout tbh. I am tall at 6ft 4in and I am really fat too. I got to try sitting on one that a guy from across the yard had, it had the forward foot controls and it felt nice. I was interested in the Sportster until the autists on here talked me out of it and from the outside looking in now I can tell that Harley's are shite.

I'll be polite: American cruisers are not a good value proposition Wink

150 miles? is that round trip or each leg? Either way, depends on the roads. Loads of 70mph motorways and dual-carriageways I wouldn't recommend the Rebel but if it's lots of small roads then it's ideal, especially for city roads.

Any reason for the cruiser aesthetic? Personally I like the more classic look (which tends to include cruisers) and I moved onto the XSR700. Much more comfortable for longer distances IMHO than the Rebel I used to have.

The Triumph mentioned is the Speedmaster. You might also consider the monotony of the Kawasaki Vulcan.

I also heard that Jap 125's are paragons of reliability yet in the last couple weeks guys with 5 - 7 year old Jap bikes are coming on with problems.

If this forum has taught me anything it's that all bikes are shite, just that some are more shite than the others Laughing

Cruisers are not particularly well suited for all-weather commuting (assuming this will be your main/sole commuting tool). As mentioned, visibility isn't great, handling not the best and there are limitations to what you can carry (topbox on a cruiser would look daft). For a commuting tool that suits shorter leg length as you mention, something like an ER6 or similar semi-faired commuter bike. Reliable, simple, good ergos and with a small fairing and/or screen it should provide sufficient all-weather protection.

Is the XVS bolt the same as the XVS with the V4? It looks like a hella fun bike.

Is this your first bike? Why are you looking at cruisers? As others said something like a V strom 1000 would be a much more comfortable bike to commute on, and handle better. But if you want the crusier you want the cruiser.

That probably says more about the maintenance regimes of 17 year olds than the reliability of Jap 125s.

Why a cruiser? Do you enjoy getting your spine compressed every time you hit a bump in the road? If so, get one with "forward controls" for maximum cool factor and maximum spine compression. Ape hangers will help you display your tattoos.

people who want cruisers invariably haven't riden a bike any further than a cbt.

Actually legit comment mate, I wanted a cruiser (Harley Iron series) before I got on my CBT. After CBT realised that you need something more upright with legs at a better angle for commuting. No way you could commute on a Harley.

I will still get a cruiser but it's just for weekend riding for the sake of riding. I will get myself a decent naked for the commute when it comes. Currently thinking of a KTM Duke or Yamaha MT.

You can commute on anything. I just prefer sport-tourers, mainly because the full on sports bikes hurt these days.

True, but I don't think filtering and handling a Harley that's trying to disassemble itself all the time will be as nice an experience as it would on a Yamaha MT-07 in the town and city.

I didn't say it was easy....
