NASA's latest rover will be attempting a landing in 12 hours:

If they can send a robot, they can send a man. Send a goddamn man Laughing

This is cool, I'll be watching that. They are suggesting;

Are they intending to do an unmanned take off from Mars as well as landing, or is the return to Earth just the info obtained. I would love to see them take off with no one onboard and the delay they have Laughing

Three words for you: will get hungry.

It's the equivalent of trying to ride your motorcycle around the world carrying literally everything you need for the trip; fuel, water, food etc..

I think it's mighty impressive just to get a robot up there. Just think what we (collectively all humans) could achieve if we were less petty with our domestic inter and intra country bickering and pooled our resources and aptitudes.

With the current technology and funding, they could send a man.

It gets about two orders of magnitude more difficult and expensive if you want that man to turn up at Mars alive.

It gets another one or two orders more difficult and expensive for that man to get home alive.

Progress is happening quickly though, it is possibly that within my lifetime it will be a realistic possibility for me to die on Mars.

Actually, we should probably send a black, trans man / woman...er...minority. Although perhaps they'd have to go in a craft built by people of similar minorities...or maybe the whole idea is racist/sexist/homophobic/whatever...oh, let's just scrap the whole thing! Laughing

It's down and all, so far, is good.

I hope to live long enough to see some boots on Mars. Possible mid 30's if they get thier fingers out.

Oh God, I love Total Recall. I like the look on his face when he is deciding what sort of girl to have on his adventure, he says "Sleazy"

Cool

Just need to take a few politicians along and they'll do nicely (the spuds, not the politicians).

I'm assuming from the commentary (and the issue of Earth-Mars comm lag) that the landing was fully automated. A little more dramatic with the video tacked onto the previous NASA control room chatter Smile

Space exploration stuff is some of the coolest wizardry there is. Controlling a random objects entry into a planet, watching it and confirming its landed must be the most intense feeling there is.

Cool shit.

Yes. It has to be due to the 22 minute round trip time for comms.

The Yanks do get over excited though.
A simple "well done chaps" would have been sufficient.
