Worn motor brushes?
If you can get inside they can sometimes be 'encouraged' to get closer to the windings, in my experience about half the time this ends in disaster and slinging in the bin - but worth a shot if you would do that anyway otherwise.

I think you are right with the brushes. I took them out and one of them looked burnt (darker than the other). I put them back and gave it a pull - the white sparks were coming from the side where the burnt looking brush was.

Will get on and order some today.
